Treatment resistent depression

Posted by Graham on January 11, 2002, at 19:29:51

Hi,
I have suffered from depession for years and have been
unable to rid myself of it. I have tried many medications and have tried extensive psychotherapy.
At this point I am very discouraged and do not know
where to go from here. I tried many of the tricyclets
and had some success with imipramine. I also tried the
MAO's Nardil and Parnate. I had some success with a
combination of imipramine, prozac and dexedrine. I
have been very interested in the posts at this site.
Recently I tried Reboxetine with some success. Some
meds will work for me for two or three months and then
stop working. At this point I'm very discouraged.I
would appreceate anyones feedback.

Hi,

Have you tried Wellbutrin or Effexor yet ? They're different from the SSRI and MAOI AD's. Which country do you live in ? Wellbutrin isn't avaliable in the UK.

Good Luck janejj

Hi...

You have severel options left. A very usefull combo for refractary depression are: Efexor + Remeron + Lamictal. Many refractary cases had successfully used this combo.

Best Wishes...//Petters

I am a firm believer that there is no miracle AD that is going to 'cure' someone who is treatment resistant. The best we can hope for is to combat the individual symptroms that make up our depression. There are meds that seem to work on individual symptoms and when they are combined can make life quite livable again.

If you have found a mainline AD that has helped you get out of the basic funk that we live in then I would stick with it and augment based on the symptoms which have not been eliminated. What are the symptoms of depression that remain with you that don't seem to go away?

I would recommend different approaches based on what it is you are still facing. Anhedonia, sleeplessness, anergia, paranoia, OCD, ruminating thoughts, weepiness?

Try to define what it is that makes up your depression and treat it that way.

Hope this makes a little sense.

I read some posts above yours that recommended looking at www. brainplace.com. Apparently, having brain imagery done can help figure out why you are resistant and which drugs may work better for you.

Go read the following:

I don't have an opinion on all this myself yet, but I will definitely go read on the Amen clinic web site (brainplace.com).

Adding Lithium to an antidepressant often times makes it work better.
