Does the tremor/shakiness from wellbutrin go away?

Posted by JGalt on January 3, 2002, at 9:28:22

Hi everyone,

I've been on wellbutrin 300mg's for 4.5 weeks now and I've developed a particularly nasty tremor off of it. I cannot hold onto a glass with any liquid in it unless I have both hands on it. Holding onto something as simple as a measuring spoon or a needle has become very difficult. I hate even eating in public anymore because it looks like I'm getting electrocuted just trying to eat. I've cut my ephedrine and caffeine usage both in half (now 25mg ephedrine and 100mg caffeine a day, rather low) and it has done little to stop the tremor. I'm sure other people have had this problem on this board, for those who have had it, does it go away after a while or no?

I would say that, for me, they went away...after a period (maybe a couple of weeks). When I first started Wellbutrin, I had a hard time. I felt really anxious and irritable and I shook like I had drunk too much coffee. I found that Xanax worked miracles in curbing this anxiety. The amount of shakiness you describe sounds like a lot. Mixing the caffeine and ephedrine with the Wellbutrin is undoubtedly adding to the tremor. Can you cut the ephedrine out completely and maybe stick to one cup of coffee in the morning? Personally, I think ephedrine is nasty stuff (i.e., I react poorly with it) but that doesn't mean it's necessarily bad for you. Maybe cut it out until you get used to the Wellbutrin.

Hi JGalt,

How is the Wellbutrin doing for your depression?
Do you feel anxiety along with the tremor?
Are you hyper,or relaxed, middle of road?
How is your heart rate?

As I just emailed you John before I checked on here (posting in case anyone else is reading), I do feel anxiety with the tremor, though it may be a round robin effect.

The Wellbutrin seems to be doing fairly well for my depression. With the main exception of some of the past week when I was on prescribed muscle relaxers and vicodin (I can't believe people like this stuff!), it is fairing rather well.

I am normally middle of the road as far as hyper/relaxed goes. I have occasional hyper times. I think it depends on how much I have to do, I seem to be getting very hyper if I have anything I want/need to do lately, which is good for the most part. I don't that relaxed ever describes my mood though, but that isn't a big problem for me so long as I don't have a bad tremor accompanying it or way too much anxiety. I am considering buspar for its lack of cognitive side effects.

Heart rate is resting 85ish (was 70ish). During weightlifting type exercise, a single set of heavy squats, bench, etc. will leave me hyperventilating and with a pulse of 140+ for 5-10+ minutes. Quite an overreaction I must say.

MB, I have further reduced my caffeine and ephedrine dosages since my post. I use ephedrine regularly due to asthma, and almost constantly congested nose/throat (had this before I ever used ephedrine, they did some sinus surgery, IMO, it accomplished little). The reduction in dosages has helped mildly, without a significant reduction of energy throughout the day, so I am very happy with that (used to not be able to be this low on ephedrine w/o very low energy/motivation).

Well, it sounds like you need the ephedrine for your asthma, but that's good you've been able to cut back. I know about low energy/motivation. I just recently tried to quit coffee (migraines and anxiety) but, as I am starting on Trileptal, this is easier said than done (waking up SOOO sleepy). I made it about three days and the depression/anergia were so severe I caved in. I think it is about moderation and finding an effective dose that is low enough not to cause anxiety.

Thats not a normal side effect, you should tell your doctor about that pronto. Wellbutrin might not be the AD for you.

Hi-

I'm on 300 mg of Wellbutrin SR daily and the tremors FINALLY stopped about a year in to it! That may be because my dosage was raised slowly and finally after a year it reached 300 mg. But it does go away. Probably a lot sooner for you. I remember how embarrassing it was for me. Definitely cut back on caffeine...that should help.

I'm happy to report that the shakiness has already subsided to reasonable levels, that is, I can write or eat without spilling anything or grotesque handwriting. Also positive, the anxiety I was having has gone down concurrently. Very odd, this all pops up within a few days and a week later I'm just about perfect again. That is, I'm still not planning on entering any pistol shooting competitions. The only problem I'm having now then is insomnia, but I don't think I'll have that problem tonight conidering how little sleep I got last night.
