Wellbutrin hormonal side effects...

Posted by taunyah on December 20, 2001, at 11:08:17

I happened across this thread from this board from last year... "Melina - Wellbutrin has caused women to start menopause and has also caused 'ovarian disorder'
(whatever that is), so the drug must be playing with the hormonal system." and I'm wondering if anyone on here knows anything further about this issue?

I took Welbutrin for a number of years and also noticed my menstrual cycle was shortened (28 days) and now, I have been having a very hard time getting pregnant. It took me 1 1/2 years to get pregnant (my third pregnancy) where as it took me a month or less with my previous pregnancies.

I had been trying to get pregnant again - but after a year, I still was not successful. Midway through the effort I began to realize that the Welbutrin was impacting my cycle - I think it was preventing me from ovulating... so I quit taking it. I noticed that my cycle leveled out pretty well -- and I think I started ovulating again... but I still did not get pregnant. We have discontinued trying (because we were both layed off our jobs.. :-( )

Anyway - when I saw that post about Welbutrin potentially causing menopause, it really freaked me out and made me wonder what else Welbutrin might have done while I was on it and I'm wondering if anyone knows if this is a permanent effect. I took Celexa for a while after I found the depression returning -- but it was disturbing my sleep so much - I also discontinued it as well. Once I got laid off, I figured it would not be as much a problem for me because I knew that a lot of my depression was related to my unhappiness with my job. I have been quite fine since I quit the celexa a month ago... and usually this is a particularly bad time of the year for me..

Anyway - if anyone knows anything about the Welbutrin side effects on fertility - I'd love to hear what you have to say.

Thanks,

Taunyah

This will be entirely theoretical, hopefully someone like Cam can come along and proofread this and point out any errors...
K, Wellbutrin is theorized to increase dopamine functioning. Increased dopamine is associated with increased levels of prolactin. Increased levels of prolactin are associated with decreased levels of FSH and LH. Decreased levels of FSH and LH probably reduce (or is it increase?...thought it was decrease) estrogen and progesterone, which would throw your cycle off and perhaps prevent the ovulation. Main reason I'm unsure of this though is I've never heard of it happening to anyone else, and I'd think if it did increase dopamine function to that extent, we'd have some guys complaining of gynemocasteia from too much prolactin.

If my theory is right, you would benefit from some bromocriptine (D2 autorecptor agonist) or chaste berry (tends to lower prolactin and increase fsh and lh), but I'm far from sure of it.
