Avaliablity of wellbutrin in UK

I'm wondering if Wellbutrin is used as an anti-depressant in the UK ? I think i read somewhere that it has only been approved as Zyban. Can anybody shed some light on this ?

Yeah, its Zyban over here - the drug being hailed as the new aid to stopping smoking... I'm asking to change onto this as I've heard reports of it being more energising than many.

Hi Jane,
My psychiatrist plans to start me on Zyban [a.k.a. wellbutrin, a.k.a. buproprion] for depression once I've weaned off Surmontil. He says it hasn't been licenced for the treatment of depression in the UK and some G.P.s won't prescribe it for uses other than stopping smoking.

I'm reasonably confident that my G.P. will agree with him and give me the Zyban. If she doesn't, I'll be pretty upset I reckon.

So the bottom line is that it can be prescribed in the UK for depression but your psych and G.P. have to agree to it. Finding a psych in the UK who'll presribe it may not be too easy judging by my and others' experience. I can forward you the contact details of my psych if required.
