How much is too much????

Posted by tina on November 1, 2001, at 12:07:44

Ok, say you're a suicidal person and you go to the doc and he gives you AD's. If you are suicidal, is it dangerous to give you a bottle of pills?? Is it possible to overdose on AD's??
Just a hypothetical question....but I do want an answer.

It all depends on which med you have. If you have a specific med in mind go to http://www.rxlist.com/, search for your med and then click on the tab near the top of the page which says "Overdosage/Contraindications." This will give you the results from the clinical trials and sometimes the results from the real world.

As a for instance if you look at Effexor, one person took 6.75gm without much of a problem. That's equivilent to 90 tabs of 75 mg or a one month supply for someone taking 225 mg/day.

From my own personal experience forget about the SSRI's and most of the "modern" meds. You won't get anything but sleep and a big mess to clean up afterward.

I won't give myself the option of suicide. I'll fight for my life, however fucked it is, and have ruled out suicide.
I know I didn't answer your question but this isn't my favorite topic.

Relax..breathe..sleep(my favorite)

For crying out loud, I wasn't talking about suicide. I was talking about the relative danger of handing out drugs to suicidal people.....
I know someone who is very suicidal and he has just seen a doc who has given him drugs. I asked this question because it scares me to think that he has a bottle of pills while in this condition.
I"ll look it up on rxlist. Thanks Chris.
Cam and Phil, your concern is appreciated.

When I first saw my pdoc he gave me a month's supply of two meds (one of which was ambien) and I was strongly tempted to take them all, so that probably wasn't such a good idea on his part, especially since I had overdosed on codeine less than a year before. He didn't know about the codeine, but that was because he didn't ask!

Don't worry, everybody, I feel much better now.

I seriously doubt that it would matter at all Phil. What if I was asking how I would use my own meds to commit suicide? Who would really care? Who would if impact? No one, not really. Oh, we can all say it would matter to us, that we care but when all is said and done, we are just names, faceless mental disorders on an anonymous blue message board, not people. Not friends not neighbours. One dies, life goes on, 5000 die in the WTC, life goes on.......People make a point of MAKING life go on. So, what would it matter?
All I can say is, it wouldn't. Not in the grand scheme of things. Not in the cosmic sense. You don't know me, you don't even know if Tina is my real name. You don't know anything about me so why would it matter if I disappeared? There would be another to take my place and her name could be Tina as well..........we are all expendable in the end. Anonymous ghosts.

Of course it would matter. Your posts are individual, just like you are. There may be many other posters, but none would have the same cadence and rhythm to their posts as there are to yours. The internet may be anonymous, but there is a sort of community here that leads us to care about one another. Otherwise no one would bother to post here.
Death happens and life goes on but no one is expendable. That's what the WTC disaster was about. It wasn't 5000 deaths. It was 5000 individuals whose lives mattered and whose families grieve and whose children will have to face the future without their parent. And that is without the added pain of knowing their parents chose to die. In some areas the cosmic sense means nothing and the personal sense means everything.
There is a bulletin board for the survivors of people who commit suicide somewhere on the internet. Reading a few posts there would bring home the pain that comes to friends and family of those who commit suicide.
If you are feeling that hopeless, please call your doctor at once and let him know what is going on. And it really does matter to me.

My docs will only give me 1 weeks supply of any meds at a time at the moment... i'm pretty sure I've been told you can't over dose ont he sSRI's though...

hate being given so little at the moment... but I guess it is better this way!

That's weird, because my screen is a weird yellow color. Can we change the color on our message screens? Blue sounds soothing.
