How do you Take your EFFEXOR?

Posted by Mr. Scott on October 7, 2001, at 9:54:26

Hi Effexor takers,

How do you take this drug? In the morning because it's stimulating or in the evening because it's sedating?

your feedback is greatly appreciated!!

Scott

I split mine between morning and evening. I'm on the XR version and not sure whether its sedating, or whether its just me ya know... I found with the normal version I couldn't sleep what ever time of day I took it.

I just found the half life a bit short, and get a bad headache if I go 24 hours between doses, so splitting it was best for me.

Hope that helps.

Nikki

Hi Scott.

I take 150mg XR at breakfast and 150mg at dinner. I have had not trouble sleeping, even when I needed to take it at bedtime.

Hi Scott,

I take Effexor XR 225 mg. all in the morning after a cup of coffee and some cereal. No problems with daytime sedation. In my case, however, it does cause insomnia. Klonopin was prescribed for this. Take care, Anne

Thanks for the feedback. Is this one of those meds that is sedating at the low end and stimulating at the higher end?

I'm not sure if there is any consensus as to why it is sedating at all if you ask me... Even at low doses at first it interfered w/ my sleep... Now i take it in 37.5 dosages three times a day... im moving up to 150 mg per day so ill probably take a double dose at 6:00... i used to have problems w/ it at night, but now when i take it i dont have any sleep problems whatsover.. i -do- experience problems if i forget to take it however...

It just goes to show you...everyone is different. I do like this med..has really helped my depression and GAD immensely, but for me it is almost like a sleeping pill. Because I have been on the immediate-release effexor (I had to titrate up so slowly, and therefore split pills--am at 300mg/dayl, now), I have to obviously take it in divided doses. Frankly, I hate to take it during the morning or afternoon..it makes it so difficult to keep from falling asleep. I have recently augmented with Wellbutrin to counteract some of this. Once I have an established dose, I plan to switch to XR, and take it all before going to sleep at night!
Point being, since we are all so different, you'll probably just have to see how your body reacts to it!
Good Luck,]
Kaysey

Hi Scott,

I take my 150mg once a day, after breakfast to buffer my stomach, and early in the day so that it has sufficiently worn off by bedtime so that I don't have achy legs and hands at night from taking it.

When I was on the regular Effexor, I did notice that I had to take it at very consistent times. Even taking it late caused feelings of malaise, although it has been so long now that I don't remember the specific effects of taking it late.

With the XR, I have a bit more leeway (ie, I take it a few hours later on weekend mornings than on weekdays) but I haven't missed a dose completely in a long time, so it's hard for me to remember--again I think I just felt generally yucky, a bit sick to my stomach, etc.

Well, the symptoms for withdrawl are somewhat similar to the symptoms for side effects when you first start it... Your body aches, your head feels like its coursing w/ electricity, your body feels numb... Its no fun at all... this is just missing one 37.5 dosage... now other people may be fine missing dosages so I cant say that this will happen for everyone... but It does affect me... I take it in the morning, and if I dont take my dosage in the early evening, theres problems....
