Effexor XR-75mg 3x per day

Posted by Diane J. on September 29, 2001, at 22:26:30

I am getting my 225 mg of Effexor XR from my endocrinologist while I am waiting for my appointment with my new psychiatrist. Dr. M said to take 75mg in the morning and then take two 75 mg tablets in the evening. I used to take it all at once in the morning. Does anyone know the reason for this? I did not ask Dr. M in the first place because he sent the prescription to me via U. S. Mail.

Thanks,

Diane

Diane - From the original literature from the company and from a look at it's pharmacokinetics, it would appear that Effexor XR should be taken twice a day. The elimination half-life is only 15 hours. Also, the regular strength Effexor is to be taken three times a day.

At one time I believed that it was necessary to take Effexor XR twice daily, especially to avoid the nightly withdrawl effects that can be seen when taking low doses (< 75mg) of the regular Effexor once daily.

This being said, I take my Effexor XR once daily in the morning with no problem at all. If I miss a day, which I have on a couple of occasions, I think I do feel edgy the night of the missed dose.

An endocrinologist may not have as much experience as a psychiatrist with using Effexor, therefore he may be relying on drug company information.

It should be fine taking the entire daily dose at one time. Do tell your doctor and pharmacist (and therapist, if you have one) that you are doing this though. It will keep everyone on the same page of treatment.

Good luck - Cam

Diane- In the past I have been advised to take Effexor in divided doses. My present psychiatrist tells me I can take it all whenever I want. So I take all 375 mgs. in the morning right after breakfast and have no problems. Whenever I have taken a dose after six or seven in the evening I have had trouble sleeping.

Good Luck,

galtin
