Effexor and blood pressure-help

Posted by ajappley on March 9, 2001, at 16:18:01

I just started taking effexor (37.5) a couple of days ago. My psych suggested I have my blood pressure taken so we'd have a baseline for future. My blood pressure was elevated (140/90 as compared to my usual 120/80). The elevation could be caused by stress or other factors. I went through the posts and most blood pressure problems seem to have occurred with higher dosages and more time, although I did find one post about a bp skyrocketing after one dose. the official literature only associates bp elevation with high dosages. However, I seem to be very sensitive to most meds and often have atypical reactions. I'm going off the effexor now to see what happens to my bp. Any wisdom out there?
Thanks,
AJ

Don't go off Effexor till you are used to it (weeks) and you have multiple BP readings confirming elevated BP. 140/90 is not a big
deal if it is not confirned or just for a few weeks. One would expect possible raised BP till
you get used to it. If it continues after the "break in period" then you should discuss
with your doc about stoping it. You should NEVER
stop a med, esp. Effexor, without speaking to your doc first.

I'm on 150mg and my BP was high for a little but it regulated again. I too have very atypical symptoms and do find the effexor to be helpful, but if you are scared of the medication perhaps you should consider others. What ADs have you taken?

A BP of 140/90 is the minimal level for consideration of treatment. It increases the risk of stroke & heart attack slightly, over several years.... that is all.

often effexor causes a mild BP lability in the first month or so. This is not a reason to stop the effexor.

Can anyone shed any light on effexor raising BP? It seems to have been doing that to me for the past 3 mos or so; have been taking 75 mg for about 4 to 5 mos. Even new bp meds not really helping, but missing a dose of Eff. seems to help. Can anyone help?

Need to talk to your doc about maybe changing it to something else. I am not hypertensive, but when I was taking just 25/mg day, my BP went from a pre-effexor 120/78 > 145/85. Also, if you are drinking a lot of caffeinated beverages that can contribute to that.

Thanks, Mitch--I do drink Coke, but not loads of it, and maybe 4 cups of coffee per week, but I will try to cut back on that. My doc isn't the best on mixing drugs or being up-to-date on what affects what; this isn't the first time. Maybe I need a new Doctor!!! :) Thanks again! Otie

Otie

I found cutting my caffeine brought my bp back to normal for me. Perhaps caffeine-free coke?

Best Wishes
