effexor+paxil help???

Posted by johnjones on August 22, 2001, at 14:03:02

I am being treated for anxiety disorder. I have been on remeron, buspar, xanax, imiprimine, prozac, paxil.
The only ones that worked were the ssri's. The only problem with them is sexual problems (no climax). Paxil really helped me at 20mg but had the sexual side effects. So my doctor decided to lower the dose to 10mg and augment something else with it, like a tca.
I was wondering if I could take a low dose of effexor with 10mg of paxil?

I have heard of sexual troubles with Effexor as well. This is a little out there, but you might try a dopamine agonist instead in addition to the Paxil. The one I would suggest is pergolide (Permax), mainly because it is quite cheap and more activating than pramipexole (Mirapex). Ask your doctor what he/she thinks.

You will not find a pdoc that will prescribe both venlafaxine and an SSRI. The reason is that they both of the AADs act on serotonin in very similiar ways.

Paxil tends to be the worst among the SSRI's for sexual dysfunction. Any AD that works on 5HT2A I believe, hinders one's sex life.

Bupropion does not impede on sexual function and can even augment it. The catch is that bupropion does not have the same efficiousy rate in severe depression as the SSRI's and venlafaxine. Bupropion is also not as broad spectrum as most other ADs.

From my experience, trazadone (100mg/night) does help somewhat. There are other meds that have been studied for sexual dysfunction but the results have been inconclusive.

Even though my libido has dropped significantly and I take a lot longer to ejaculate on 450mg venlafaxine, it sure as hell beats not having a libido and not being able to ejaculate when I am off of all meds and in a deep depression.

Good luck!
