Just started Zyprexa with Prozac

Posted by Collete on August 16, 2001, at 20:28:59

After one week of Depakote, I saw my pdoc(my second visit with him) and asked about Zyprexa (as well as other other meds that I have learned about here). My situation is that I have been on Prozac since it first came out and the last few years it seems as if it's just not working as well as it used to. We are hoping that the Zyprexa will help me with my falling & staying asleep problems as well as "perk" up the Prozac. I am starting with 2.5mg each night. I will post my results. Depakote, at 125 mg did nothing for me at all.

Collete,

One of the best things about Zyprexa is that you should know within a week just how you are going to react to it. You will probably get some initial sedation from it so take it after dinner and get a good nights sleep. Low doses (like 2,5 mg) seem to work great for sleep and anxiety which may be caused by other meds like Prozac.

The best thing that Zyprexa ever did for me was to stop the racing obsessive thoughts running through my head.

I hope it works out for you,

Chris

That's good to hear.
I took my pill last night (along with other meds that I take & which the pdoc said I should continue for a while),but found my mind racing anyway when I tried to fall asleep.
I will try taking the Zyprexa much earlier tonight. What time do you suggest? Thanks, Collette

Collette,

I've been taking Zyprexa for about 10 months and it's been a great med for me. It has really helped with the racing thoughts and my sleeping as well. I felt the benefits from it very quickly, within a few days. I've had some additional stress in my life over the last month or so and started to feel a little manic again. A few days my psych added Topamax to the mix and that seems to have done the trick. I feel a lot calmer and am sleeping thru the night without waking at all. He says I may experience some cognitive dulling at first from the Top, but it will pass. I'm still at the minimum dose.

I take my Zyprexa about an hour before bedtime. Just curious, how long have you been on the Prozac and how is it working out for you?

Greg

I've been on Prozac since it came out(maybe 14 years?)It really helped me tremendously with my depression & was an improvement over the tricycics I was using, but I have always had problems sleeping and over the years have used many things to help me sleep. The last few years I have become more & more dysthymic. This started me thinking that perhaps there was a better AD for me now. Also sleep has become even more troublesome. I believe my diagnosis now would probably be something like "soft bipolar" rather than bipolar as my "manic" has never been more than racing incontrollable thoughts, inability to focus, anger control...stuff like that, more that extreme highs. Whatever. I am finally seeing a pdoc and we starting with adding Depakote to my Prozac but that had little effect. I feel quite well today, but I think it is probably too soon to attribute this the one dose of Zyprexa. The meds I take to sleep are .5 mg Xanax, 2 benedryls & Soma. Pdoc says they are OK for the time being.

Best wishes to you Collete. You happen to be on my favorite all star combo. You may eventually go up to 5mg like me, but it sounds like you are onto something good. The only thing I can think of that is better than Prozac+Zyprexa is Prozac+Zyprexa+Adrafinil.

John! Your posts were probably the ones most responsible for my bringing up Zyprexa with my pdoc. It didn't seem to do anything special for my sleep last night but I have felt REALLY GOOD all day today. None of the fatique and apathetic feelings. It's hard to describe but I just feel so much "better". It doesn't seem possible after just one night but I don't think it is a placebo effect, because then I would have "felt something" with the Depakote. I am trying not to get too hopeful(how ironic is that?)
Thank you John! Collette

Maybe JohnL's postulation that the med. best suited, and with best affinity for your condition is the one that responds fastest, and with lowest dosage. Maybe that is what you're seeing take place with the zyprexa.

Last night was my 3rd night of 2.5mg and I still feel very well during the day, but I still don't sleep well at night. There has been no change in my waking up between 3&5am and being unable to fall back to sleep. The other meds that I take to fall asleep are 2 benedryls, Soma and .5mg Xanax.
Do you have any thoughts or advice about how I can "sleep like a Zombie" as has been described by other Zyprexa users? Thanks, Collette

Well, if you are tolerating Zyprexa well at this point, you could always try going up to 5mg. That's what I ended up doing. Now that you mention it, 2.5mg was somewhat helpful for me for sleep, but it wasn't until I got to 5mg that I really slept good. It's worth a try, and it's only a small dosage jump higher than where you are now.

I'm glad to hear your days are better. That's awesome. I send you my congratulations and my best wishes for it to continue!
John
