WANTED: Experiences, thoughts re BUSPAR!

Posted by Janelle on August 13, 2001, at 22:13:45

Hi -- my friend who I had posted about once before who's too out of it to go online is suffering from depression and bad anxiety. She got to her pdoc and the pdoc is taking one step at a time, being cautious, and has prescribed Buspar 15 mg twice a day for the first week. She will then go back for assessment.

On behalf of my dear friend, I would greatly appreciate hearing any experiences, thoughts, etc. about Buspar. Thanks.
-Janelle

The consulting mood-disorders pdoc in my case, upped BuSpar from the original 40mg/day to 80mg where I stayed for 8 months and have since successfully tapered back to 40 on.

I'm no expert - it just worked in my case, both for augmenting Paxil and working against anxiety...

Um...me and at least one other person on this board had problems with urination, caused by BuSpar. If she has this prob she'll need to stop taking it right away. I don't think that's common, but something to keep an eye on.

hi janelle-

i am by no means an expert on this one. i tried it and only made it 3 days. i couldn't feel (that's a common side-effect for me though and why i'm only on wellbutrin) and i also couldn't pee (my pdoc said that's a sign that the med was going to that part of the brain that i didn't want it to go to.) but that's just how it effected me and i think it's very rare. more commonly i have been told by my pdoc and have read from many others that buspar works well if you are the right makeup for it, but for many others it does not work.. but you never know and it's always worth a shot. and also that it might work sooner, but usually it takes a few months to be able to tell.

all that is to say, i don't understand why buspar. i would think there were better options for anxiety that work faster, as well as better options for depression...but i'm also not remotely a medical professional. sigh..... i want your friend to feel better soon. -terra

Oh, I can clarify that one.
There are no options for anxiety that work faster and are NOT considered habit-forming. Actually, there are no other specific anti-anxiety meds at all except benzos. The other options are all considered addictive to some people and/or on some level, and I'm finding more and more doctors that say "that's not even an option, forget about it".

Thanks for the input. Buspar was indeed given to my friend because it is non-addicting/non benzo, and fairly mild (she is sensitive to meds).
