Blood in Excrement...Depakote

Posted by JeanHamlin on August 12, 2001, at 10:58:24

I've been taking Depakote for 3 days for Bipolar2. I;ve had some slight diarrhea and today i found blood in my excrement. Is this normal, or something I should be worried about?

By all means mention it to your doctor. But don't be scared by it. It can be caused by the irratation, diarreha, which is common. Bright red is normally from a hemroid(sp).

Could be a liver damage (Depakote can induce liver probs) ! So call your doc as soon as possible ! I wouldnt make you anxious but this could be a serious problem. > as well as a trivial one (like Willow said).

Willow,
Yes, thank you. I think it was just the fact that I just started this medication, and my body wasn't used to it. My boyfriend had similar problems with Prilosec, but they went away after a few days. I feel much better now. But i'm still kinda worried about some of the side effects i've heard about, like weight gain and hair loss. I get so frustrated!! Not only do i have deal with this whole bipolar thing, but possible side effects too. You think in the age of modern medicine we'd be better at these things by now!! Thanks for your concern. :)

Perhaps a trip to the library could help you guys out. In Canada we have excellent cookbooks put out by the "Heart & Stroke Foundation." Even though at the present time this isn't an issue for myself, but the recipes are appetizing and healthy.

My father is on Zyprexa which is notorious for putting weight on, but so far he hasn't gained any. A friend was on ampitrypline and she gained weight on it, because it gave her the munchies and she chose the cookies, etc., plus wasn't physically active. We don't have to be marathoners just daily walks can help, plus it's a healthy addiction. My love is swimming!

Keep in touch, and if you care we are trying to get a chat going in the psycho-babble open. Once you get signed in it's really user friendly. Hope to see you there!
