Does anyone know when this will actually become available and what the name of it will be? Thank, Collette

It's supposed to be available within another week and is to be manufactured by Barr Laboratories exclusively for the first 6 months. I don't know the name but the pharmacist will. It should be about 40% cheaper than Prozac.

It is my understanding that generic prozac would go by the generic name, which I think is fluvoxemine? And there are a few companies said to be making it, so I imagine different pharmacies will contract with different companies.

I read it will be available in September.

Hi Collette--

I had a prescription for generic Prozac filled yesterday (Texas). All generic versions of a med are labeled only with the generic compound's name, which in this case, is fluoxetine hydrochloride. (Fluvoxamine maleate's trade name is Luvox--irritatingly, unnecessarily similar generic names, since they're chemically unrelated.) The cost was a few cents more than $2/20 mg. capsule--not a huge saving. The price will plummet when Barr Lab's generic exclusive expires in 6 mos.

Well wishes---medlib

Hmmm..that is interesting. I phoned in a Prozac refill today and I wonder if they will give me the generic version. Thanks to all, Collette

Refilled my Prozac today and - lo and behold! it's the generic version, manufactured by Barr. I live in Northern Virginia. It even looks different. This stuff better work as well as the original. If it doesn't you'll probably all hear about it :-)!

Unless your doctor writes down in the script "No Substitution" or "Dispense As Written," the pharmacist most likely will switch your script to generic Prozac (fluoxetine).

Hi Collette,
I refilled my Prozac prescription yesterday (8/12) -- and they gave me the generic brand. (i live in Michigan). My copay went from $15 for the regular Prozac to $7 for the generic. Not bad!
