Prozac patent runs out at midnight

Posted by Wendy B. on August 2, 2001, at 11:47:07

Hi everyone,

Eli Lilly's patent for Prozac runs out at midnight tonight! This from a CNN report just now on the news. Any thoughts or rants or comments?

Serafem and the 90 mg tab patents run out in 2007,
however, so Lilly will be ok, don't worry.

While on the one hand, I am one of those who has been helped by SSRIs and know that many others have been helped by all the rest of the pharmaceutical arsenal, I still know we really understand only a fraction of the total knowledge to be learned about how the brain works. That federal research money going into depression (vs. other illnesses) is not enough, that the toll depression takes on human life and productivity is enormous... You guys know the stats better than I do.

I won't toast Lilly with a glass of pseudo-champagne (can't drink on the drugs) tonight at midnight. But I WILL toast Lilly or another mega-rich pharm company, when they can do an individual scan of each of our brains and tell us which receptors need tweaking, give us the scrip (one pill which works all day, or a vaccine, which works for weeks, or a patch which might work for months), which works for every dopamine or NE or other receptor we individually need it to, and send us on our way.

I'm tired of taking these pills, guys!

My rant for the day, I never do this, so humor me, ok?

Yours,
Wendy

I believe Barr Laboratories has an exclusive to produce the generic Prozac for a year; other companies will follow. At least it will be affordable for people who need it.

Barr Labs has the exclusive rights to manufacture generic Prozac for the first 6 months. After that, every one else can join the fun and profit.

Barr Labs, a few years back, threatened to sue Lilly re: manufacturing generic Prozac. Lilly paid them off $4 million and Barr Labs withdrew their suit. Therefore, Lilly's patent hold on Prozac was extended a few more years. Four million dollars is peanuts since Prozac had been a $2-billion drug/year for Lilly for several years. Barr Labs did the same thing to another drug company (not sure exactly which one) which has a blockbuster antibiotic. This drug company paid Barr Labs $16 million off to withdraw their suit.
