Is it ok to take AP's as needed?

Posted by MM on July 24, 2001, at 2:02:45

Sorry if I'm monopolizing the board, but I have a prescription for 25mg seroquel for sleep, and I'm not taking it every night, just when I really can't sleep. Is that risky? (like for TD?)

It's okay to monopolize the board as long as you're asking questions we all learn from. And you are. :)

The answer is: I rather doubt it's okay. This isn't a sleep aid. An antipsychotic is going to need to be in your body all the time to help you.

If you wanted a sleep aid, you should have gotten Ambien.

Seroquel is being prescribed as a sleep-aid because it has no chance of creating an addiction in the patient. Ambien does have that chance.

I'm going to put in a vote for Remeron, if you want to sleep, and then sleep all through the next morning... Just take 15mg of Remeron the night b4... Ambien is much better for me, I sleep better on it, and dont wake up still in a coma, but what has been said of Ambien is true...

Also, I must add, in regards to Remeron, it's terribly annoying to be too fatigued to go to the store the morning after you've eaten every single piece of food in the house. Terribly frustrating!

I know plenty of people who are on AP's on an "as and when needed" basis... My psych also suggested this for me.. but I find taking them at regualr times is contolling my problems better.. but AI do take extra if needed...

I'm really not sure if I like seroquel. I wake up and feel kind of like someone shook my head around all night. A whole pill is usually too much so I take either half or a quarter. I didn't really decide I needed a sleep aid. My pattern isn't staying up for days, it's just staying up late, but I usually go to bed around the same time every night and wake up around the same time every day. I don't have a job or anywhere I usually need to be....but the pdoc said that between 12 and 4 am is when NREM sleep occurs so I need to be asleep between those hours. I guess my history must be full of red flags for addiction/abuse, or he would have prescribed ambien (or klonopin), not that I would want to abuse psych drugs, even if I was in that frame of mind.

See, I don't think you need a sleep aid, unless you WANT to go to bed earlier. Your doctor is...well, I wouldn't say WRONG, but it sure doesn't SOUND right.
Personally I never had a clock installed in my forehead, if you didn't then YOUR body doesn't know what time it is either! Just make sure it's light at the right times and dark at the right times, and you can sleep when you want to. Other than socially (being up when friends are sleeping and vice versa), I can't see where it'd be a problem.

As for red flags of addiction/abuse, don't be so sure. I'm sure I don't have those, and my doc won't prescribe those either. She's benzo-phobic, positive it's addictive in every person who takes it. End of story. And I'm sure she thinks the same of Ambien.

I have the Seroquel too, I decided not to try it til I had insomnia again cuz you're not supposed to drink on it and I like to have a couple once in a while.
