are there any decongestants, etc. safe w/ Nardil?

Posted by Angela5 on July 15, 2001, at 7:29:30

I have a nasty cold, and am utterly miserable... I take Nardil, Wellbutrin, and Hytrin daily. Are there any decongestants, etc. that are safe with this?

Thanks,

Angela

Coffee & hot soup? I know where I live, all the OTC stuff like Sudafed and ppa are out of the question.

Intranasal oxymetazoline (e.g., Afrin) should be okay: it acts locally, and even if some gets into your bloodstream, the concentration will be so tiny that it won't be clinically significant.

Oral decongestants like pseudoephedrine are right out, of course.

I'm on Parnate--another MAOI. My pdoc says it is okay for me to use antihistamines but not decongestants. They seem to help. I usually use a spray, like Afrin recommended above for a cold. He told me that Tylenol PM has an antihistamine in it, and I can use it if I have trouble sleeping. (As if---!)

They can. They tend to dry your mucous membranes, which may be helpful or it may be really bad if you have a cold. If the congestion is related to allergies, antihistamines are definitely the way to go.

That's silly! Benadryl by itself is fine as a sedative. You don't need the Tylenol unless you're in pain. (Although I've never been convinced that Tylenol does anything for pain, either.)

I use a prescription steroid nose spray called Nasocort. It works very well and is safe for long term use unlike the OTC nose sprays. Ask your doc.

Nasocort is a steroid nasal spray. It wouldn't cause any problems with Nardil. (I took Beconase, a similar product, for allergies when I was on Nardil.) Steroids won't necessarily be good decongestants, though. Afrin is safe to use too, and it will directly address nasal congestion. (If you're really neurotic about MAOI interactions :-) then you might want to monitor your BP the first few times you try it.)
