Effexor XR (high dose) and Prozac (low dose) ?

Posted by Jocor on July 12, 2001, at 8:35:37

Hello all,

So, I'm still on 300mg Effexor XR and 10mg Prozac. I don't seem to feel any better, in fact, I seem to feel worse! I am having symptoms of depression and the obsessive thoughts about my health continue!!!
What is happening? I added 10 mg Prozac 2 weeks ago because of the obsessive thoughts.
Maybe Prozac has not taken effect yet???
I'm scared!!!
Usually, when I go on an antidepressant, all symptoms dissipate after a while and I can resume my normal life. This time, I was OK for a while until my appendicitis surgery and then things went downhill.
Any ideas?

Thank you for your support.

I was told after my gallbladder surgery and subsequent descent into hell and suicide attempt that the general anesthetics are hard on your system in many ways including on your emotions, that they are fat soluable, so it takes quite some time for them to work out of your system, and, therefore, can play havoc for a long time. I have never done any research on this. But the timing of all the horrible stuff that happened after my surgery two years ago seemed to give some credibility for this stuff for me. It might be an explanation on what is happening for you.

Thank you so much for that explanation...that makes me feel better and NOT like I'm going crazy!!!
How long did it take you to recover (emotionally) after your surgery?
I had my surgery Feb. 28, 2001.

thanks again

I had my surgery the first week of November and I wasn't back to safety probably until that February - though, one could argue that I wasn't really back to real safety until lately (and the verdict is still out on that). But the effects of the surgery, I believe, lasted for at least three months - I was pretty unstable emotionally before the gallbladder flareup/surgery, so the instability that has been going on these past couple of years probably has no relation to the surgery. I will always believe, however, that the surgery/anesthesia played a role in my suicide attempt - that it was a piece of the pie.
