prozac induced panic.....AHHHHHHH

Posted by gilbert on June 5, 2001, at 20:01:21

Should I continue to torture myself and contnue to take prozac for panic and ocd when the darn pills at 5 mg doses are giving me little mini panic attacks all day so much so thAT i HAVE HAD TO TAKE TWICE THE XANAX i NORMALLY DO. I was kind of hoping that I could quit the xanax because the prozac was going to calm me down and level me out after a while. My pdoc wants me to go to 10 mg by sunday. I am not eager to jump from 5 to 10 with this shit going on. I finally realized why there is prozac in the water supply....It isn't from peoples urine as speculated...It's from people flushing the unwanted scripts down the toilet.

I hate to beat a dead horse here but my doc really wants me to try and stick this out and I am having no fun at all.

***I had the same problem and I stuck it out and ten years have passed and its working out fine but I had to start out on liquid prozac. Personally I didn't raise my dose until I felt comfortable with the dose I was at. It took a very long time. If you decide to stick it out, there's no reason to torture yourself.

When I first started Paxil for panic I was fine. But when it pooped out and I tried other ADs I seemed to be hypersensitive to them. Prozac brought out the worst panic attacks I've ever had - but it is known for being initially agitating. I went back to Paxil, but it didn't work nearly as well. I am now on Zoloft 50mg (for 3 weeks) - and had really bad panic attacks on that too but they now seem to be subsiding. Maybe Prozac isn't the one for you - is there something else you can try? (I'm sure someone else on this board can recommend other medications).

Well, as everyone is probably sick of hearing about by now, I am down on all SSRIs at this point. I was taking zoloft which initially worked to keep my panic attacks at bay but then paradoxically, as my dose kept going up, I was having breakthrough panic attacks that were debilitating even when I was taking 175 mg. of Zoloft a day. Since the SSRIs are supposedly so good for preventing panic, someone should explain that to me. I just think I am better off without them. I don't understand the mechanism but my guess is that the SSRI's have a broad range of action for a specific effect (if you are taking them for panic attacks) and I'm not so sure they are the be-all and end-all for panic attack sufferers as they are touted to be.

It's so interesting to me...how some people respond
so well to the SSRI's and others don't. I have
mild OCD and prozac worked well for me. Celexa worked
as well. I suspect the ssri's just agree with me I also
feel calmer and less prone to panic on them. However,
I hate the sexual side effects. When I try drugs
like Wellbutrin or Serzone--THEN I get some major
panic attacks and obsessive type thoughts. I wish
I could take the non-ssri's. Not willing to try
Remeron b/c of the weight gain (already gained 15 on
neurotin, which supposedly isn't supposed to have
that effect). I've often wondered why the non ssri's
like wellbutrin and serzone make me feel so damn
edgy and panicky like I'm going to jump out of my
skin or worse.

Gil -

My former pdoc had me stick w/ prozac for several months all the way up to 80 mgs and all it did was worsen my panic and anxiety attacks, and turn me into an angry monster. Listen to your body. If it is making it that much worse, then taper off. There are other things you can try.

Celexa is working pretty well for me. I'm not happy, but I'm not suicidal anymore. And my anxiety has gone down quite a bit. Zoloft is also supposed to be good. I hated Paxil and Effexor but that's just me.

Good luck -
Blue

Hi Gil.

Nardil might be an option.
