Serzone stimulating?

Posted by downer on June 1, 2001, at 12:34:53

Hi guys,

I took Serzone last night for the first time and was up ALL night. I never have trouble sleeping. I thought this stuff was supposed to knock you out. I am also on Celexa and Provigil which I take in the morning. It has also given me a massive headache. I have taken a number of drugs that are supposed to be stimulating before and never had this effect. Should I take the Serzone in the morning instead? Thanks for your help.

You could take it in the morning, but most people claim that it makes them drowsy during the morning. The other thing you can do is have your doctor add an atypical neuroleptic (olanzapine) or tradozone to help you sleep.

downer -

Some people definitely find Serzone stimulating, just as some paradoxically find sedating SSRI's like Paxil stimulating. Sometimes this feeling goes away, sometimes it doesn't. But you can't tell based on just one night. Maybe a week will start to tell, but not just one night.

That said, even if the insomnia goes away, that doesn't mean you've necessarily hit on your optimal dosing schedule. I know that for me Serzone works better when I avoid it at night, otherwise I feel too groggy the next day and sometimes oversleep. Like you, I also take Provigil, and that usually negates any tiredness from my Serzone/Klonopin combo. I take all of the Provigil and the lion's share of the other meds first thing in the morning. I rarely take anything after mid-afternoon, but sleep wonderfully -- quite unlike the frequent insomnia I had pre-meds!

I'm curious as to why you're taking both Celexa and Serzone, unless perhaps the latter is as a possible antidote to sexual dysfunction from the former. Fyi, I had been on Celexa and Klonopin, and then added the Serzone about a year ago, followed shortly thereafter by the Provigil. When I concluded that Celexa wasn't really doing me much good, I dropped it with no detrimental effects.

You seem to be implying that it's the Provigil/Celexa combo that causes your headaches. Was this happening before you added Serzone, too? I ask because the Celexa and Serzone combo definitely gave me bad headaches, and I read a post from someone else who said the Celexa/Serzone combo worked great for him mentally, but that he had to give it up because of unexpected headaches.

How much Provigil are you taking? On the occasional days where I up my Provigil from 100 mg. to 200 mg. for a temporary "booster shot", I sometimes get a mild headache. Aside from the headache issue, if you're taking 200 mg Provigil daily, and anxiety is part of what you're trying to treat, you might find that making 100 mg the usual dosage works better (unless you're trying to treat narcolepsy, too).
