Herbs and Supplements vs. Wellbutrin...?

Posted by sl on May 10, 2001, at 16:16:22

I was doing well on Wellbutrin for 5 years or so, until it sorta pooped out.

I'm on Effexor now and it's not working well.

can anyone suggest herbs and supplements for me, given the above...? I was thinking of trying SAMe and/or Yohimbe and/or St John's Wort....?

Hi SL,
I'm on Wellbutrin now, just came off of Effexor about a month ago. It caused me too much fatigue and foggy-headedness for 8 months, so I finally quit (not easy, but I did it!) I was on 300 mg Wellbutrin along with the Effexor to help offset the fatigue, but it didn't do much. Now, with just the Wellbutrin, I am noticing my moods steadily going "downhill."

I have been seeing a nutritionist (in addition to my psychiatrist), who is very knowledgeable, and not a "quack" of any sort. She is convinced that I would do well on St. John's Wort. I am going to begin taking it next week (after I get off antibiotics for an infection.) She uses only standardized forms of the St. John's Wort, where chemists work in the labs, rather than herbologists.

The kind she uses is by Nature's Herbs, and it's called "Power Herbs -- St. John's Power 0.3% Standardized Extract." I am supposed to take 300 mg. three times a day.

I will let you know how I do. My psychiatrist is not happy about this at all, and insists I stay on the Wellbutrin while taking the St. John's. I just had to give it a try, since I've been taking AD meds for 12 years, all with rough side effects.

Hope this helps a bit in your search --

Take care,
cindy

I recently read in Time Magazine that a large well-done study of St John's Wort show that it did no better than placebo.

Neal,
Do you know which issue of Time that was? (or even around when it was out?) I would really like to read that article so I can see if I'm just spinning my wheels with this St. John's. I'd also like to share it with my nutritionist who swears by the stuff.

Thanks for the information,
cindy
