Richelson RE: Nardil induced Sexual Dysfunction

Posted by jb on April 10, 2001, at 18:19:49

Dr. Richelson:

Are you aware of any drugs which have successfully been used to treat phenelzine induced anorgasmia? If so, can you provide some indication of efficacy?

For reasons too numerous to mention here, I would not like to switch to other antidepressants which do not have a sexual side effect, such as nefazodone and bupropion. I would like to discuss your thoughts with my psychopharmacologist, so he can determine the best course of action. I realize you are not giving advice or making a medical diagnosis.

Many thanks,

JB

Sexual side effects of MAOIs are common and as difficult to treat as those with SSRIs. There are also no systematic studies, only case studies in the literature to provide guidance. Serotonin 5-HT2A receptor blockers have been used, but there is a least one case report of a possible interaction between cyproheptadine and phenelzine. There is another case report in the literature on the use of sildenafil to treat MAOI-induced sexual dysfunction.
