antibiotics and depression.....Stephanie L.

Posted by Stephanie L. on March 31, 2001, at 12:16:28

I have a really hard time taking antibiotics. They profoundly sedate me (I sleep for l8 hours after just one tablet, adult dose.} I would sleep around the clock if I I took them around the clock. If I chance to get up, I stagger, feel dizzy and can't wallk.

But even worse than this is that antibiotics cause depression -- deep, horrible depression, as bad as I have ever had as a bipolar. Last time I tried antibiotics (I took a day's dosage of amoxicillin), I was down in a hole so deep it took me three days to even start functioning again.

I can take antibotics at a small dose (less than a child's dose). And of course they don't work at that dose. I cannot take at all the stronger antibiotics.

I have searched and have never found any information on this. I've had the problem for l2 or so years; when I started having it, I was on marplan for my depression; now I take about 5 meds for it. I have tried various alternative medicines that are supposed to help with bacterial infections -- such as garlic -- and have had no success

(I don't know that the problem could be. My doctors say "have never heard of it." Any thoughts would be most welcome.

I wish I had your e-mail address and I could mail you information about this that laymen don't have access to.
