Buspar

Posted by Alli on March 11, 2001, at 10:30:39

I started taking Buspar this past Friday. Anyone have anything to say about this drug? It seems pretty harmless. The racing heart, tight chest, messed up stomach (diarrhea) and exhaustion from all of the above were getting to be too much. Will Buspar help? Alli.

Hi, Alli. For me, Buspar was equivalent to placebo. But, I have fairly severe social phobia, particularly at certain work settings, such as giving presentations, etc. I found Klonopin to be very effective. Most primary care physicians are not very familiar with Klonopin. I received my initial prescription from the University of Michigan Anxiety Disorders Program. They also recommended Nardil (phenelzine is the generic name). There is a synergistic effect in combining Klonopin with certain anti-depressants.

I currently take Klonopin 3 mg/day (1 mg in the a.m., 1 at lunch, and 1 at bedtime). I also take Nardil 60 mg/day.

You may first want to try the Klonopin by itself, and then augment it with an SSRI if you need additional anxiety relief.

By the way, you may want to do a search on a free database called PubMed. Its address is www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi
and it's a free search. You can type in

Buspirone AND anxiety

and see what you find. I believe the results I've seen previously is that Buspirone is little better than placebo. If I recall, it affects only the serotonin 5HT1 receptor. It's complicated, but there's a lot more than this single receptor involved in most anxiety disorders, such as social phobia or generalized anxiety disorder.

Let me know if I can answer further questions.

Good Luck.

John

My experience with buspar is that it has been virtually useless. If your anxiety is really severe I would look to Klonopin and/or an antidepressant.. But who knows, Buspar might work for you.. It was after all approved for the treatment of Anxiety..

Klonopin + SSRI is the easiest way to start I would think..
