Anyone use a combination of Klonopin + Ativan

Posted by Nic on February 19, 2001, at 13:35:48

Just wondering if anyone uses a combo of Benzos to combat sever panic and Anxiety attacks. I am currently on Klonopin ( up tp 3mgs/day). But there at times of the day and situations where it does not seem to help at all.

Kind Regards,

Nic

Hi Nic,
I take 6mg of klonopin/day (2mg tid) and 2mg of xanax sublingual for breakthrough panic attacks. It takes the xanax 6 minutes to stop an attack that can last 20 minutes or more for me. This is the combo given to me by a panic specialist. Take care, Judy

Judy,

How long have you been on this combo, isn't the Klonopin dose too high. My P-doc told me not to take more than 3mg/day. It's your panic attacks usually wort int the evening and at night. They are for me. Thanks for your response.

Hi,
I have heard my klonopin dose is fairly high, the normal dose being 3-5mgs/day. It is used as a secondary mood stabilizer for me though (I have bipolar disorder also). The bulk of my panic attacks occur at night- which is when the xanax is useful. I started out at 0.5mg tid three plus years ago, until arriving at this dose which keeps the panic attacks at bay unless I'm in an unusually stressful time, or in a dysphoric manic episode. Hope this helps- Judy

Judy,

I have also been diagnosed as Bipolar. Currently I am on Celexa 40mg/day and like I mentioned in the earlier note on Klonopin 3mg./day.
Does you dose make you real lethargic?

Thanks,

Jorge

Jorge- are you dxed bipolar 1 or 2?

The reason I ask is every AD I have taken has propelled me into a hypomanic or manic episode (prozac was the worst). If you are stable with this regime- great. Is klonopin the only mood stabilizer you use? If so, I'm jealous. No, I never get sedated from klonopin- I've been at this dose for about 3 years. Like I said, it doesn't work if I'm manic (although routinely it keeps panic attacks at bay). Because I am so tolerant of benzos, I have to take increased doses of antipsychotics when manic. Take care, Judy

Judy,

Thanks so much for your responses. About six years ago is when I started taking any kind of medication. I was wanting to give up binge drinking, which seem to occur every couple of months. Back then I was put on Prozac for a couple of years. You are right, it always made me more panciky and anxious. Finnaly I had a manic episode, and it was then that I was diagnosed as been Bipolar. But fear, panic and anxiety it's what has always gotten to me the worst. I have been sober for six years now and that's great, I think that's where the AD's help.
I was put back on Prozac and Ativan later on and that seem to work ok, ecxept that I need more and more Ativan. I was finnally taken off of Prozac and put on Serzone + Ativan, but was way too lethargic. That's how I am now on Celexa + Klonopin, but nothing else. Sorry for the long story.

Kind Regards,

Nic

Klonopin is known for its huge tolerance effect. I hape personally got to 6mg/day. The worst thing about klonopin is not getting on to whatever dose, but getting off it. It is extermely hard to taper.

Clinically, doses up to 20mg/day has been reported with no particular problems.
