risperdol

Posted by jennjenn on January 4, 2001, at 18:04:42

i've been on prozac (40mg) and wellbutrin (200mg) for a while now and was not getting any relief from severe depression. my psych put me on .5mg risperdol and i have had a great deal of improvement.

however, i am concerned about weight gain. i've tried to do some reading, but am confused by conflicting info. some say it is due to increased appetite and can be controlled by diet, others say that it is due to a change in metabolism and cannot be helped. my doc says that at the low dose i am taking, it isn't an issue.

as i am new to risperdol, i'd love to hear from anyone who has experience.

At 0.5mg you do not have to worry about weight gain. If any, you might gain a pound or two, that is it.

Weight gain from anti-psychotics is caused by both metabolic changes and increased appetite. If you are worried about weight gain I would say that risperdol is your best bet until zyprasidone is released.

Good luck!

Hi,
Just wanted to say that I take 2 mg of Risperdal and I have not put on any weight.
I had gained 20 lbs on Paxil and since I started Risperdal I have not been able to lose any considerable weight but at least no more weight gain.

Best of Luck to you,
Nat

Hi,
I'm sorry Risperdal isn't working for you. If you are not getting any relief a change is definitly in order.
I'm no expert, I wish I knew what to tell you.
What does your Doctor suggest?
I would give lamictal a try. My Doctor had suggested it to me instead of Risperdal or Zyprexa ( but i did not want to deal with the weight gain).
I've never been on ritalin. you might want to see what other people on the board have to say.

I wish you luck, i know how hard it can be to find the right medication.

thanks nat. i'm seeing the doc on tuesday and i'm going to go over options with him. i didn't know that lamactil had the side effect of weight gain...oh joy!
i've read a bit of threads about ritilin on this board, and it sounds promising, but as i have a history of drug abuse...i'm not sure the doc is going to give it the thumbs up. he won't even give me xanax for anxiety, he's given me neurotin because it's not addictive.
anyway, thanks again for your response. this feels like a never ending cycle. i never expected that my life's work was going to be trying to get the chemical makeup of my brain in line.

Hi,
just wanted to clarify something about my post. I was referring to zyprexa and weight gain, not Lamictal. I have not heard of Lamictal being associated with weight gain.

What was your experience with Neurontin?
I take Ativan, as needed, for panic. I have a history of alcohol abuse but my Doctor has been pretty open about prescribing tranquilizers as long as I do not abuse them which has not been an issue for me.

Take care,
Nat

thanks for the clarification. the idea of being fat and depressed is just too much to bear.

neurontin has been o.k. for me if i catch the anxiety attack early. but i take it in a really low dose (100mg) and if it's already going full tilt i still have to take a xanax (leftover from an old script).

thanks for chatting. this is the first time that i've been on any message board like this. everyone seems really well informed and eager to help. what a nice thing.
