MEDICAL INSURANCE RUNNING OUT

Posted by Andre Allard on January 12, 2001, at 23:29:14

I will finish my co-ops in a few months and therefore will no longer be a full time student. My job does not have drug coverage and my meds cost me $16/day Canadian. There is no way in hell that I am going to pay that. With out meds I will end up in the hospital on a form 1 because I will become severely depressed and suicidal.

My question is can't the pdoc work something out for patients like me who cannot afford meds but that cannot function without them. Either the government or drug companies pay for my meds or else they pay for my hospital stay.

I think the free drug program James suggested is the best route. Another option might exist though, depending on what drugs you take. There are European mailorder sources that are both fast and cheap. As a matter of fact, I pay cash for Remeron (my sleep med) from a European mailorder pharmacy and it is actually cheaper than my copay alone would be if I bought at the local pharmacy.

Let me know what drugs you need, and I might be able to locate a reliable and inexpensive source that you can afford. Maybe. Maybe not. It's worth a look-see though.

Wellbutrin is a tough one to find. I'll have to look around. Last time I checked there were a couple places, but they were really expensive. There was one that was attractive though, I just don't remember where I saw it. I'll see if I can dig it up.

Take a look ath these two sites - not real cheap, but about as good as I've seen... I think JohnL may have sent these to me when I had asked about wellbutrin/zyban earlier. I don't recall for certain, and didn't look just now, but I think the less expensive one required a script from a doc, and the other didn't.

If I remember correctly, you do (so do I...Toronto). Go to your nearest pharmacist and ask for the Trillium drug plan. Basically, under this 'plan', the provincial government will pay for your medications - it is aimed for people like us, that need to spend alot of money on medications and do not have any insurance to cover them. I was in the same situation as you. My doctor told me about this drug plan. Basically, I'm paying very little - my medications are almost free (they would cost me $275 a month Canadian).

I know it sounds too good to be real, but it is real. Please ask me any questions you may have.

Good luck, Janice

Cassie

This plan is run by the Ontario government. Check with your local provincial MP about a similar plan in Manitoba. You may have to inquire through the federal MP's office also.

Good Luck!

Hi Cassie
>
I had posted a long'ish response to you that didn't seem to post. I don't know why this seems to happen to me so often.

anyway. If you don't know your MP, check with your doctor, or your pharmacist. If neither of them know anything about cheap medications, try the insurance companies. I was just living in Alberta where an insurance company gave me insurance for a low cost with no questions asked (THEY LOST MONEY BIG, BIGTIME).

It makes sense that a country with universal health care would have medication available to people who can't afford it. Otherwise, we'd end up in the hospital. I heard a comedian say recently that the healthcare in Canada is so good, even the hospitals are overbooked:+)

Sorry if my last post suddenly posts and I have posted twice. I hope this damn thing posts.

Janice

If this Trillium plan does pay for all meds I will piss myself.

Thank-you very much!

Andre
Ask your doctor about it. There's a $2.00 charge for eache rx, so get prescriptions for 3 month supplies if they're ongoing ones.

If the $2 charge still makes you anxious, I suggest you get some depends also. :)

P.S. Your doctor should have mentioned this to you if you had discussed your concerns over being able to afford the medication!
