natasha--
Did your migraines begin after starting the birth control? If so you should be cautious. My sister also has acne and took birth control for the same reasons. She finally realized the birth control caused migraines. Her gyno just told her that she CANNOT take the birth control anymore because the migraines are a sign that the pill may cause a stroke. Birth control pills can also exacerbate depression. Just something to consider.

Being part Irish I'm also pretty sensitive-skinned. The disappearance of my acne actually coincided with the commencement of aggressive SSRI treatment a few years back. I can confidently say that none of the pmeds I taken have caused any sort of flare-up.

Good luck,
Jah.

I had an allergic reaction (rash) to Celexa too. I found that Paxil actually helped to clear my skin up (perhaps because I wasn't worrying so much). When I started weaning myself off it after 3 years, the acne came back! I've found the best thing for it is Clinique - really expensive but the only stuff that worked.

I'm 19yrs, & I am on the pill & a type of antibiotics for acne. I am also on 100mg zoloft, & it hasn't caused a flare up of my acne at all. The best way, though, as someone else has mentioned, is for you to give it a go and see.

All the best!

I have acne, and cannot tell if it is due to my ADs or to other medical issues--insulin resistance, and possible polycystic ovaries. In any event, I just saw a new gyno, who prescribed alesse, a low dose birth control pill. She said she has read reports that it helps with insulin resistance, irregular periods, and acne. We'll see. I've only taken two doses.

I also have a question for Rach and any others on birth control pills: Today I was totally grumpy. It could have been not enough sleep, etc., but I also wonder if I should be looking out for reactions to the b.c. pills. Any insight?

I'm not sure about grumpiness! Although, it has been reported that some bcs can cause depression -so that is definately something you need to keep an eye on.

I am also acne prone and from my experience with numerous ADs I have found serzone to be the only one that irritated my skin and caused acne.

Noa,

Alesse wouldn't be my first choice of birth control for depression and acne (I don't know about POS). Alesse has a relatively high amount of progestins, which has been linked to depression and also acne. The newer birth control pills like Alesse have a new form of progestin that is supposed to help acne by decreasing the type of testosterone that can cause it, but a suprisingly high number of people find that it worsens acne.

My sister, who's never been seriously depressed before, had depression and mood swings on Alesse. I too am looking into birth control pills for acne that won't exacerbate depression, and have decided to go with either estrogen only or a birth control pill called Ovcon35, which is monocyclic (tri-phasial pills are implicated in depression) and has the least progestin. You can read more about hormones and mood in a great book called _Screaming to be Heard_.

Have you gotten _all_ your hormones checked out? I just found out I'm a little high in testosterone and a little low in estrogen.
