paxil and saint johns wort

Posted by jesse on December 4, 2000, at 15:49:21

hi, I've been taking paxil for a couple of months along with saint johns wort. I recently stopped taking the saint johns wort and I feel better without it! does this make sense? can there be some sort of negative interaction?

hi. I dont know the answer to your question--but I wanted to ask you about paxil. Are you taking it for panic? If so, has it helped?? I have been suffering from panic attacks and have heard about paxil. Just wanted some feedback from you if possible. thanks.

I've noticed the same phenomenon, except with SJW combined with various others drugs instead of Paxil. I feel a lot better the day after my very first addition dose of SJW. But then it levels off and doesn't seem to do much. When I stop taking it I get some kind of rebound effect where I feel a lot better again. Though it is short lived, I can get a good effect by either adding or dropping SJW. Continuous use doesn't help much. I have no idea why this happens, but I've done it enough times to know it's not my imagination.

When I tried SJW with Paxil I became extremely sedated. I couldn't drive my car five minutes without having to pull off the road to shut my eyes. I was surprised to see it didn't affect you that way.

Jesse - Using both Paxil & SJW has caused serotonin syndrome, in some people (anxiety, heart palpitations, sweating, etc.) due to excess serotonin in the body. You may have had a mild case of this.

Another explanation could be additive effects of the side effects of both of these medications due to interactions at other neuroreceptor sites (eg. the norepinephrine reuptake site). With the number of active compounds in SJW (some known, most not) it would be difficult to guess what other receptors would be involved.

Both of these are guesses, but both can (and have) happened. Hope this helps - Cam
