canker sores-on new med - PAIN!

Posted by maribeth on October 27, 2000, at 18:25:14

Help!
I started on Topamax one week ago, am now up to 100mgm a day
Also take Effexor 300mgm daily and Seroquel daily. On Monday I developed a
"sore mouth". I kind of ignored it as it was a busy day
by Tuesday my tongue was so swollen that I sounded like a moron when
I tried to talk! I got some over the counter stuff
but by this morning I had gone through three tubes of the stuff
Today I called my Primary care doc and he prescribed Lidocain 2%
in Benedryl. SOME relief at last! I use it every three
hours and it seems to last almost that long. I might have hade A
canker sore or two when I was younger, but come on, I
counted seven this morning! And I'm 57 years old. Has any one
out there experienced anything like this? I ruled out
acid in the diet and gastid acid reflux disease-- stress
no more than normal.So........could it be the med? Any and all
supord gratefuly appreciated. Maribeth

Canker sores are caused by a virus already present in your system. The only time I get them is when I'm severely stressed, which apparently affects my immune system. My unprofessional, amateur opinion is that these drugs are somehow lowering your resistance to the virus, and that your swollen tongue is an allergic reaction. It sounds like this drug is not for you.
Some tips - some OTC remedies for canker or cold sores contain menthol and camphor, which are both irritants and, if anything, will prolong healing.
Also, when applying medication to your lips, don't touch a sore and then touch the end of the tube with the same finger. It's safest to use a
fresh Q-tip.
Finally, call your doctor! -SGH
