Posted by mmr on October 6, 2000, at 12:27:27

Please bare with me this is the first time I have ever posted anything. I am 32-year-old male and have recently started effexor xr. I am hopping that this med will help me with my depression aswellas my add. The thing that I am very interested in is, how do I say this intercourse went very fast for me I am hopping that the side effect regards to intercourse will help me last longer. Anybody have anything to say about that.

------------------------------------------------------With no intention of alarming you, give the Effexor about three or four weeks and you wont have to even worry about sex anymore. You won't care. It can and usually does cause extreme loss of sexual desire,-------good luck

James here.....

Please beware of making these generalizations. It does not do this to all people and many AD's cause delayed ejaculation in some, which I think is what the original poster what hoping for. It is always safe to say "this is what happened to me" but as any regular board member can attest, effects and side effects vary greatly amoung different people.
Effexor, Welbrutin, and Remeron seem to be the AD's with less sexual side effects; at least that is what the studies show. Actual effects in the general population will vary.

I agree, James, but would add Serzone to your list.--Cindy W

---------------------------------------------------------I am not trying to be cruel or to generalize, however, the two most notorious side-effects of many(but not all) AD's are weight gain and some form of sexual dysfunction.

As a woman, I know that, especially int he first 3 months of Effexor use, it took me quite a bit longer to reach orgasm. I've not been on it 4 months (longest on any med!! Woo hoo!) and my sex drive is picking up nicely again, and the time it takes me to orgasm isn't too bad now - longer than med free, but not a silly length of time. Also, it seems to have made my orgasms much more intense!!!

So, in my experience, first few months are hard, as it did take away any sex drive I had, but now, 4 months on, theres no stopping me!!!

I've experienced the same side effect w/ both effexor and prozac...the inability to ejaculate...getting horhy and achieving erection were fine...but the frustration of going weeks w/out orgasm was quite frustrating..but as the ohter poster said...these are the side effects for this person...all results will vary...w/in 2 days of discontinuing the effexor...sexual release is back...but so are my symptoms...

For me, the effexor (perscribed for ADD, not depression) created severe lethargy and apathy. I started sleeping 12+ hours a night, gained about 20 lbs. and sex was the last thing on my mind. When I did manage to have it (sex that is), it was more work than pleasure. It was hard to stay...you know...interested :-) and it took a long time to reach an orgasm. BUT, when I did reach one, it was QUITE intense. Actually quite worth the effort.

I've since gone off (and suffered manic-depressive episodes for 4 days) and am on Welbutrin (6 days). Still to early to tell, but my energy level is higher and I have more interest in sex. Though, I have yet to test my "functionality".
