Hi everyone. Can you all tell me what side effects to expect , from effexor? I am starting it tomorrow and am nervous about it. I'm also on lithium, klonopin, and zyprexa. I've been on a lot of antidepressants-- serzone, remeron, all of the ssris, and imipramine. What can I expect from the Effexor?

HI Lin,
Initially, you might feel your mouth being dry, and crave fruit juice. You may also experience chs=anges in sleep patter, and dreams. Overall, I find effexor to be very helpful. The only big side effect that I hate is weight gain.
So don't worry about it, taking effexor is mot such a big deal, and it is way more effective than the other anti-depressants that I have been on.
best wishes,
john

The first two or three nights after I started it, I didn't sleep at all. That sounds awful, but it wasn't. I rested, calmly, comfortably, I just didn't sleep. Then I started sleeping again. I've had vivid dreams, not bad, just very vivid. Dry mouth, but that's mostly since adding Prozac to it, when I also got very hot, sweaty, etc. Some days I'm tired and draggy, some nights I have trouble sleeping, but all that seems to be the combination of Effexor XR and Prozac.
Effexor on its own was a dream come true. I was in heaven, but it wasn't totally effective against my depression. I was calm, no anxiety, but mildly depressed.
No other side effects for me, no weight gain, no headaches, no nausea, no tingling anywhere, just a nice, normal feeling all over. OH!!! That's the best part for me: all the other ADs I'd been on gave me what my doctor calls 'emotional constipation' as well as the real kind. Effexor does neither! I don't feel my emotions blunted, and I'm digesting food normally! What a concept! An AD that doesn't screw with you innards!
Good luck on it. For people it works for, it's a miracle drug. Your mileage may vary. (Of course, we hope you'll be one of us!)
This is the end of the thread.
