Ambien and Restoril

Posted by John Stewart on September 21, 2000, at 13:22:27

Does anyone have any experiences related to taking both Ambien and Restoril together? I have chronic insomnia and I have found that these two drugs compliment each other. Ambien gets me to sleep (even at 5 mg dose), while Restoril keeps me asleep.

Restoril alone does cause me to fall asleep but once I am asleep I remain asleep for almost the entire night. One pharmacist that I mentioned this discovery to (I tried this on my own after everything else failed)said she had heard of that combination being prescribed before; on the other hand, my family physician absolutely refused to prescribe both together, saying they were both benzodiazepines... which I understand is not correct. Any input will be appreciated. Thank you.

John, I don't know if it is allowed, but I have used Ambien with Restoril a couple of times. But then I found the following information on some web site, and tried it. It really , really works.

It seems that just Ambien has worked for patients for years with no need for increase by following these rules.
Take 10mg of ambien with FOOD when you are ready to retire. Then go to bed without doing anything else. There is a window of opportunity that you may miss if you get up and do the laundry, etc.
I've been doing this for over 18 months.
good luck
Peg
