Effexor/fibro/anxiety

Posted by jeniwafer1 on September 19, 2000, at 23:04:22

Hi-

My name is Jennifer. I am 26 and have fibromyalgia and anxiety disorder and have been on Paxil for the past 6 years. When I am on the Paxil, the anxiety is basically non-existent, only I still seem to have flare-ups with the fibro. (only in my chest where it originated). I want to get off of Paxil and my main reason is that I cannot orgasm while taking it, or very rarely. My doctor mentioned me switching to effexor and made it seem like it would be no big deal. Well, it is a HUGE deal to me. I am seriously worried about weight gain and any other side-effects. I have been in WW for the past 9 ms. and have lost 20lbs. and I'm NOT about to put it back on. I feel mentally wonderful on the Paxil and do not want to risk that changing for the worse. I tried to go off the Paxil about 2 ms. ago and sunk into horrible depression which left as soon as I started the Paxil again. If anyone has ANY information for me on whether or not effexor has helped them with fibro. pain, please let me know. Anyway, sometimes I think not orgasming wouldn't be as bad as going through all this....then I think, naaa...:)and my boyfriend would agree:) Any info. would be SO appreciated!!

P.S. One more thing...does it help you sleep. I never sleep, and if I do, I too have dreams that could be turned into Stephen King novels!!!

Thanks, Jennifer

Jennifer, I can really relate. I too have fibro.
The effexor put me in a zombie state, but not enough to sleep. I am unable to sleep and also have incredible dreams. I have a crushing pain and I wonder if that is what yours is like? But maybe the effexor will work for you, because I am usually the opposite. Do AD's help any of your other fibro symptoms?

Hi Peg-

Thanks for responding. Well, when I was diagnosed 6 years ago, I tried quite a few different things, and I can't remember why they didn't work, but they must not have, because I have been on the paxil for about 5 years now. When I went off the paxil, my fibro. didn't seem to get any worse, but my anxiety shot through the roof. I think the anxiety is part of the fibro. because that started around the same time, so paxil definitely helps for that. I am supposed to go pick up this effexor and I am really hesitant. I know it might work great for me, but I have tried so hard to lose the weight that I have, and I pray to God that gaining weight is not a side effect. Did you take the effexor at bedtime??? I don't seem to have a problem falling asleep, it's staying asleep and the dreams I have are extremely vivid. Where do you have most of your fibro pain? How long ago were you diagnosed?

Jennifer

> Hi Jennifer, I switched to Effexor not too long ago, about 1 1/2 weeks now, and I have had no side effects or weight gain so far. The first day I felt drowsy, then it went away by the next day. I was afraid to try it, too, I had been on Serzone and I was doubtful that anything would help me, only make me sick. But I took it, and I have been feeling quite good, and I've only just begun. I know you are hesitant to try something other than what you are used to, but I've heard so many people complaining about Paxil, so it's really up to you whether or not you want to try something different. Listen, if Paxil is working for you, I think you should stick with it. Perhaps you can lower your dose a bit and you won't have the sexual side effects. Good luck!
