celexa wellbutrin - CarolAnn and others

Posted by ksvt on July 18, 2000, at 17:20:45

I have been taking WB for years and about a month ago I started augmenting it with Zoloft. My pdoc and I have concluded that the side effects outweigh the benefits, and he would like to find something else to augment the WB. He is reluctant to prescribe Serzone, which I suggested on account of its lack of sexual side effects. His experience with it is that his patients have found the initial side effects to be so dibilitating so as to interfere with normal functioning. He typically starts people at very low dosages of ADs and increases them gradually so I doubt this is a matter of too high an initial dose. I suggested Celexa because I have seen postings on this site which suggest that its side effects may be milder than those for other SSRIs. I was on Prozac for about 8 months some years ago and went off it because my condition was worsening rather dramatically at a dose level which allowed me to hold on to my libido. I've had a sexual side effect to Zoloft also although curiously enough, that seems to have dissipated of late. My bigger problem with it is that it has interfered too much with my sleep patterns and has made me feel pretty anxious and edgy. (I seem to feel washed out during the day, and real wired at night). Also the benefit I felt initially has definitely leveled off and I'm reluctant to increase the dosage when I'm having trouble tolerating the side effects. I would love to hear from anyone who has taken Celexa either by itself or in tandem with another AD. Thanks

After years of decreased sex drive, Celexa was a gift for me. Lets just say, I'm a happy camper again!! ;^)
I am on 60mgs per day. I also take Topamax (125mgs) Cytomel (25mcg) Methylphenid (7.5mg).The side effects I had on Celexa weren't all that bad. Dry mouth was the worst lasting a few months. I had diarrhea for a week or so. For the first week I was sleepy in the late afternoons, but I was lucky and got to take 20 min. cat naps a couple of times per week so it wasn't all that bad. I started with 20mgs of Celexa (nothing else) last year, the otherstuff has been added in the last eleven months. My boosters are the cytomel, and the methylphenid (generic ritalin)
Best of luck!

jojo - I read noa's post and the previous and following posts. I'm not sure I understand why you augment Celexa with WB and Remeron. Could you explain? Thanks

ksvt,
Celexa has not been a miracle drug for me, but I have definitly had some improvement. However, I didn't improve until I got up to 40mgs. and oddly enough, I couldn't orgasm on 20mgs. but they came back pretty strong on 40mgs., although my "drive" is non-existant, if I 'force' myself for hubby's benefit, I do get a nice pay-off.
Sorry it took so long for me to reply, haven't been able to get online for a couple days. Good luck! CarolAnn

Several reasons: I'm not completely satisfied with
the antidepressant effects of Celexa alone, and
I'm hoping the Remeron and Wellbutrin will help to
counteract the sexual side effects of the Celexa
and to provide an antidepressant effect when I
stop the Celexa for several days before sex. I'm
not sure how efficatious this is, but I've had no
negative side effects either.
