I'll take quotable quotes, for 200 Alex...

Posted by CarolAnn on July 1, 2000, at 15:18:25

Found this in a book recently, I don't know why it amuses me so much, but thought I'd share...

"Why is it that when we talk to God, we are said to be praying,
but when God talks to us, we are said to be schizophrenic?" -Lily Tomlin

That is classic, CarolAnn. The Search For Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe is great reading. (Did the quote come from there?) Lily Tomlin has an interesting angle on just about everything.

There's another one about how when your mental illness bothers you, you're neurotic. When it bothers others, you're psychotic.

I saw her perform this a long time ago, it was great.

A bit off topic, but here's a great quote from a friend of a friend who is an attorney and also a deeply religious person:

If you want justice, go to God. If you want a decision, go to court.

perhaps it's because it takes a while for oneself to get close enough to thier creator such that no real separation is apparent. and while there are more versions of "normal" behavior than there are bedsheets drying in the summer sun, ANY deviance from this hyperflexible notion automatically brands a person as "outside" this "norm". it may be as simple as others being afraid of what they can't understand thus they belittle the experience by calling it a "disease". there's also another view: religion is for those afraid of going to hell. spirituality is for those who have already been there. personally i ascribe the whole deal to, "those who say do not know, and those who know do not say."-the corollary being that they needn't "say it" because thier entire being exudes "it" every moment of thier lives. thanks for the chance to put this stuff down! this may be the clearest i've ever stated it. fancy that.

Success

"To laugh often and much; to win the respectof intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Hey paul,
I particularly like the above section, where does the quote come from?
And, the idea of all the variations of "normal", geez, how true is that? I sometimes think that(nuts as I am), I am the only normal person in my world! There's a quote somewhere that goes something like: The truly crazy, are those who never question their sanity. Don't we all know at least one person who believes (despite their obvious lunacy), that they are sanity personified?
Well, that's enough for now! Take Care, paul.
sincerely, CarolAnn

Renee,
here's the funny thing; as I read this quote, I kept thinking, "well, I've done that, and that, oh I've done that, too" And yet, I have never in my life thought of myself as a success in any way what so ever! Isn't self perception a screwy thing? I will bet that all psycho-babblers could easily find themselves having the same 'thoughts' I had, while reading Emerson's quote. But, we are all so hard on ourselves, we all find it so difficult to see our own good.
I think we need an insurrection or revolution, maybe a "sit in" of the mind....everyone together now, CHANT..."Hell no, we are not low. Hell yes, we are the best!" all right, all right, someone else write the 'chant' then...or maybe a mantra, everybody ready to meditate? Okay, go! "Ooooohhhmmmmm, I am a good perssoooohhhnnnnnnn...".

Obsessive Compulsive Order…

a friend of a friend of mine renamed her OCD this.

In general, it took her 3 hours of cleaning in the morning to get out of the house. Hard on the career! ouch! But she insisted, it was obessive compulsive order.

Renee, you reminded me that I used to have that hanging on the bulletin board above my desk at work, but misplaced it in the transition to a new job last year. Will have to put it up again. It is a good one.
