just a reminder

Posted by paul on July 3, 2000, at 0:49:58

most of us here at one time or another probably lose sight of just what we are doing. as an old friend reminded me today-"you deserve a damn medal just for SURVIVING this long given your childhood/battles/etc". and i extend the same sentiment to the bulk of us here. NEVER FORGET that you ARE improving although it may not seem like it imminently. the courage to deal with the hand we've been dealt is gargantuan in the extremis. DO NOT be put off by those who due to circumstances WILL NEVER understand where you've been nor where you will go. it is not those who have had sanity held out to them on a silver platter that history remembers. rather it is those of us who must FIGHT LIKE HELL day in and day out who will make the greatest impact on our world by continually working to make an impact on ourselves through dedicated self-awareness and growth. above ALL else-remember that you are NOT alone-remember also that with each new hand at the oars the night we paddle into becomes less opaque.

Paul- thank you , thank you ! I have been so down on myself and wondering why I can't just pull it together! I have been in a bad phase of bipolar and have felt really guilty for not 'handling' things the way I think I should be. I always get to where I am at a loss to try and explain what it is I am going through. You, on the other hand, have done a wonderful job of explaining just where I am coming from. Thanks again- Cynthia

Thanks. Sometimes I get impatient with myself, not doing enough, not making enough progress fast enough, etc., and your post made me stop and acknowledge the progress I have made.

The image of the paddle is a good one. Sometimes it feels as if I have been rowing against the current with a broken paddle, and sometimes I get tired and want to rest, but worry that I will be pushed backward.

I often wonder what it would feel like to feel fully equipped and powerful and not rowing against the current but with it.

Paul,
Thanks! That is such an important thing to remember! I know that I rarely say it to myself, usually I hear it from friends or tell it to others. Thanks for reminding us that we are, in fact, survivors.

And we should be proud of our courage and hard work.

Happy 4th!
Shar
