MAOI and SAMe

Posted by Steve on September 15, 1999, at 4:24:32

I recently stopped taking Parnate after several unsuccessful months on the drug. After waiting about 10 days, I began to take SAMe and after one day, my depression almost completely lifted. I felt great for about four days, but then sunk back into depression.

Was Parnate still in my bloodstream when i began to take the SAMe? Might the abrupt end of SAMe's effectiveness be due to the fact that the Parnate had completely left my body?

Does anyone know about the safety/possibilities of combining MAOIs with SAMe?

Thanks,

Steve

It's hard to say what part Parnate is taking in your cycle. It's possible it hasn't left your body completely. But what I would like to add is that after seven days on SAMe I had a complete lift of my depression on 2 - 200mgs SAMe per day. It went slowly downhill after that. I increased to 4 pills per day (@ 1$ per pill), but I never got back to that original point. Well, after paying $4 per day and getting only partial success (perhaps 30% reduction in symptoms), I scaled back to 2 pills a day, and am sorry to say, have sunk very low again. I've read that this supplemant can be take up to 8 pills a day (yikes!!$$$) for severly depressed people (me), but that's too rich for my blood. I've also read it's good in comination with tryciclics. One poster (JohnL) noted it helped out his Prozac. So my suggestion to you is...if you are at the lower dose, try the increase (from what I've seen it's extremely safe) and go from there. It seems likely that the cost situation will be your biggest roadblock to ultimately
finding out if it will be successful.

I have an injury in my left knee that I believe
is due to a cartilige tear. In an article I read,
it claims that SAMe not only lifts some depression
but can also aid in repairing torn cartilige.

However, I am highly allergic to any form of sulfa
drugs and for this reason, must be extremely
cautious when self-medicating. Does anyone know
if SAMe contains any form of sulfa drugs? If so,
what other cartilige repairing drugs are available?

There are no drugs that heal torn cartilage in a knee.

That is the main reason tears are usually treated with surgery.
