Good Night

Posted by harry b. on June 30, 2000, at 0:34:46

Since my 'crisis' last weekend I have not been back to
work. I guess its obvious I've been spending a LOT
of time here. If I hit the reload button again tonight
I'm going to load my .45 and do a Dirty Harry on this CRT.

I'm doing 'better' these past few days. I wish there
were about a hundred different words and shades of meaning
for 'better', just like there are many different words
for snow in some languages where its cold.

I'm broke, the mortgage is past due, and my disability
insurance owes me over 5 grand. They are still 'investigating'
to try to find a pre-existing condition. Which is nonsense
because I've been employed and had the insurance long
enough that I'm exempt from the pre-existing clause.
Figure that one out.

I met an interesting guy today. I go on a walk each
day. Usually outside, sometimes on the indoor track at
the gym. Today it was raining and I like walking in
the rain but I've had a cough for 4 weeks so I went to
the gym.

There is a pool table in one of the rooms and every
afternoon an old guy's club meets there. They shoot
pool, cheat a lot, and have a good time. There are always
3 and sometimes 4 of them. We are on a first name basis,
always nod & say hello. My estimate of the ages of 3
of them was late 60's to early 70's, and that is correct.

My estimate of the 1 guy who looks the most fit was mid 60's.
After doing my laps on the track I hit the whirlpool.
The mid 60's guy came in too. We talked a bit and I
can not believe his age. He is 88 yrs old! That simply amazed me.
I've got to talk to him again to find out his secret. He
is healthy, walks each day, has no fat, has muscle tone,
and has almost no wrinkles. And his coherts say he's the
better pool player of them all. Hell, he's in better
shape than I am. Just thought this was interesting.

Sign off harry & go to bed
OK, bye
hb

PS- I watched some TV at the gym, still am without it
at home

Good night Harry b,
sounds like you had an interesting day. Keep talking to this 88 yr old, he sounds good for you, like he shows you that it is possible to be fit and well at the same time. Good on you!

regards kerry.

hi harry b,

I read many of your posts, if not all of them, although I don't alway reply to them, but I like checking up on you harry.

Did this man give you any of his health tips? If he did or does, I'd love to hear them. You sure seem to be a social person and respond well to interacting with other people (or maybe socially very sensitive?).

I wish you would give your bullets to someone (keep your guns) until you are more stable. Take care, and take care of that cough - 4 weeks is a long time to be coughing.

Your friend, Janice

Thanks to Kerry & Janice-

Janice, you don't read ALL my posts? I'm so
disappointed ;) but its nice to know _someone_ is
checking up on me.

I did not get any of this guy's health tips, except
that he walks an hour each day, has never smoked,
uses the whirpool or steamroom most days, and
socializes with his buddies most every day since
his wife died. He is also active in a few fraternal
and charitable organizations.

When I see him next, I'll press him for a source of
the magic elixir he must have.

I'm not a social person. Most times I think I share
some traits with good old Ted K. whom we've been
discussing recently.

I have no problem walking up to someone and introducing
myself. I do have a problem maintaining a conversation.
If I am in a small group of people, say 6 or less,
I feel comfortable. If I am in a large group, I'm
uncomfortable. In either situation I'm the quiet
one.Socially sensitive? Yup. But not nearly as self-
conscious as I used to be.

Often I feel intimidated, even here, by people who
are more intelligent than I, or who have impressive
degrees. Some times not. I have a friend who is
a veterinarian and a biology prof. I have a close
acquaintance who is a heart surgeon. We get along
great. Recently I met a guy at the lake. Late 50's,
friendly, wanted to talk, etc. He is a prof at a
local college, I was immediately intimidated by
that & backed off. Weird, huh?

I have tons of acquantances. Flying people, sailing
people, gym people, etc. But I have very few people
I consider friends. And none that I view as really
close friends. In light of what happened this
year with my friend/father-figure/surrogate family,
it will be a very long time before I'll trust again.

No comment on the firearms, you would not like my
view.

Gosh, I do go on don't I? Sorry.

Best to both of you
hb
PS I did go to the doc about the cough, got meds,
thanks

Hey, harry b.,

Good ole social anxiety. You seem to want to be with people, though. So, it isn't that you aren't socially oriented. Socially anxious or shy might describe it better.

Well, but you have a penchant, it seems, for finding interesting people, so maybe you don't have to say too much in a conversation anyway. Besides, people like people who listen well.

When Janice expressed concern about the gun, I took it to mean she read your post last night to be saying you would use it on yourself. I thought that at first, too, but then I wondered if you meant you would use it on your computer, Dirty Harry style.

That wouldn't be a good choice, either (if you shoot your computer, you couldn't come to babble to chat, for one thing), but not the same level of concern as your thinking of using it on yourself.

Can you clarify your remark about the gun? Just to make us feel safer that you are safe.

Noa-
I said:

"If I hit the reload button again tonight I'm going
to load my .45 and do a Dirty Harry on this CRT."

meaning only that I'd blast the CRT to smithereens
so that I would get off this machine & go to bed.

It was humor, cynical & mildly frustrating humor to
be sure. Maybe it was dark, but I didn't perceive
it to be.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. Appreciate the concern.
Won't mention the G word again. Promise.

BTW I got a new NRA magazine today, want to come
over & read it? NO NO NO!!! Why did I say that?

hb ;)

Harry b, another good night…

In reply to Re: Good Night, posted by harry b. on June 30, 2000, at 15:41:07

hi harry b,

I bet walking an hour a day and socializing with his buddies are great health habits. One of my worst fears is living to be a 100 year old manic depressive, still miserable and suicidal. I wonder if anyone has ever done any studies into how long, or how much shorter mentally ill people live than normal people.

I'm not a social person. Most times I think I share
some traits with good old Ted K. whom we've been
discussing recently.

I doubt you have more in common with Ted K. than depression.

Harry did you ever find out what happened and why? Of course, you don't have to tell me. I am curious as to whether he ever gave you an explanation for why he finished your friendship so abruptly. I don't blame you for being so hurt and being afraid to trust again.

Take care, Janice

ps if i had firearms, this computer would never have gotten set up and I'm not sure I'd have made it past puberty.

peace

Harry, even though you are doing so much better than you were when I first encountered you ("met" seems the wrong word for this medium), I tend to agree with Paul about allowing someone else to care for your firearms for a while. Having them around is just a little risky.

I know you were joking about the computer, but it did remind me of the reality that you have those guns around.

& while you are at it, harry, give all your knives to your neighbor to keep.

Cash in your ticket for the bus /train that goes over that big bridge.

Don't go to any tall buildings.

Give me a while & I will think of more things for you to not do harry !

Hope you got a little chuckle from this.

no not making fun of you !!

the point which harry will not carry, is that guns are just a tool.

If he were determined, the lack of a gun would make no difference.

just like that, the presence would not either.

what harry needs is support, asking nothing in return.

we all want harry to get better. I am sure he likes his guns, if he has any ??? & I don't know.

anyway any small pleasure or joke is good when one is down. Taking away even a small pleasure, hurts when one is down.

I will leave the subject to rest, as well.

I wish the best to all, with harry & noa having a special place in my prayers tonight.
