My Dear Friend,

I know that I cannot give you the words to help you find solace in this time of tragedy. I can only imagine what you must be feeling. I, like others am writing this thru tears.

I believe that Suzanne is in a place where there is no pain and she will be loved, cared for and protected forever. I hope that someday you can find some comfort in knowing that.

Know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, and if there is anything I can do please don't hesitate to ask. My sympathies go out to all of you.

My love to you and your family,
Greg

Cam, my heart goes out to you and your family. I live in Orlando, right outside of Disney property. If I can help in any way, let me know and I will give you my phone number (I don't want to just post it here). I feel horrible, because when you were saying you were coming here, I kept meaning to offer myself as a local contact, and I just never got around to it. I'm so sorry this happened to you. Please, please, take me up on my offer of help, anytime. You are all in my prayers. love, CarolAnn

>
> We got back to our resort and there was a message about karaoke on our voice mail. My older daughter, Suzanne, decided to go. At 11:00pm my wife began to worry. I said she was a big girl and could take care of herself; we didn't need to smother her.
>
> At 1:00am she still wasn't home, so my wife (Suzanne's stepmom) called the front desk. Karaoke ended at 10:00pm and the desk asked if we were from Canada. Suzanne has a different last name than ours. The desk said they were sending security over. At this point my wife freaked. She woke me up.
>
> I waited a couple of minutes and security didn't come, so I looked out the front door and saw several police cars and flares blocking the road and traffic being re-routed. I jogged over to the scene and two EMS guys and two Troopers were on me immediately. They asked who I was and I told them my name, but my daughter, with a different last name hadn't come home. They asked me to describe what she was wearing. I did and that was when they told me she was dead.
>
> It seems that she was coming back from the bar the where karaoke had been (they didn't serve her because she was underage and she had drank 3 diet cokes). This was at 11:33pm. She was crossing the road on crosswalk with flashing lights with a guy from the same complex we were staying at. The guy saw the truck at the last second and turned. He had obstructed my daughter's view. The big truck (a 4X4) hit the guy's leg and hit my daughter flush. She hit the road and it fractured her skull. She died instantly and probably didn't know what hit her (thankfully).
>
> We went to the hospital and I.D.'d the body and met with the medical examiner.
>
> The guy who hit her had minimal coverage ($10,000) and was 23 years old. He was in a hurry to get home from work and was driving aggressively (but police say probably not an excessive speed - he was cutting through parking lots to miss lights, etc.). His insurance will probably not cover the ambulance ride. We have some travel insurance, but we really don't know how much in a case like this.
>
> I am still in shock. I don't think it has really registered fully with me. I don't think I will be posting for a while, but I will lurk to get away from this, every now and then. We just arrived home about 2 hours ago. My 4yr. old sort of knows what is going on and she knows her sister is dead, but I think she is starting to come to the realization of what the implications of dead really mean. My wife is a mess, but she has called a few key friends and family who are handling the arrangements to get the body back home (and got us back home). We know some wonderful people.
>
> Please do not e-mail me, as I am trying to contact my dad, who is sailing somewhere near the Cook Islands and his e-mail only works in port. My e-mail fills up pretty fast and I don't want to miss his message.
>
> Thanks for listening; I know almost all of you care about me and I thought that I should share this with you.

Cam, I'm so very sorry! Wish I had the right words to say...just want you and your wife to know I care.

Dear Cam,

Please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of your daughter. No words can adequately convey my feelings right now. I’m so very sorry. I’m sitting here in my office crying over your loss. The help you have provided to so many people here to ease their pain is immeasurable. I know there is nothing we can do or say right now to ease the pain you are feeling. I feel compelled to do something in my own small way: I’ll be stopping at church tonight after work to light a candle and say a prayer for Suzanne, you, your wife and your family. God bless you all.

With warmest regards,
Michael

Cam,

I am so sorry. I will say a prayer for your daughter.

I am not very good at grieving. Maybe it is male thing. I am good at fixing things but I have a hard time giving up control. But at sometime, maybe during some tear jerker movie, I will be overcome by the immutable pain of my loss, and I will abandon myself to my tears. I know this is a good thing. It means the grieving process has begun and my (long) recovery is underway.

I've had a little time to get over the initial shock of your posting, and have a feeling I can't shake, and hope you understand where I'm coming from.

I would very much like to do something to honour your daughter, and I'm sure there are others here who feel like me.
If you were a friend who I knew in person, I would ofcourse send flowers, but this isn't really possible here.

What I would like to know, is there anything your daughter would have liked, just something that maybe we could all do... Something as simple as planting a tree, or feeding a stray dog - I don't know. I'm not religious, so often find it hard to find ways of showing I care (like a lighting of candle).
Or maybe there is a favourite charity I / we could make a donation to.

I'm pretty sure I won't be alone in feeling this.

And never forget where we are...
