CelexaAdderall

Posted by JudithC on April 18, 2000, at 5:42:26

I have been on Celexa (taking 40milligrams)since December;and I have taken Adderall (30milligrams)for over a year....but I developed muscle stress/pain in my jaws, back, arm and have had to stop the Adderall which has me in total fatigue. Has anyone else had this difficulty due to the mix of Adderall with an SSRI?
Thank you.

Judith, You should go to your dentist and have your "bite" checked out. All the symptoms you describe can be caused by grinding or clenching your teeth in your sleep. It might be that all you need is a "night guard"(it's kind of like a retainer, but fits over the top of the teeth so the upper and lower can't touch). I just got a new one, because I've always had this problem, and my insurance paid for most of it.
What happens, is that the grinding and clenching throw off your bite, and put a lot of stress on your jaw muscles. The stress on the jaw will affect your neck, which will affect your back, and then your arm/arms. It's amazing that something as seemingly minor as your jaw muscles, can affect so much of your body! So, before you give up on a medication that helps you, definitely check out whether a night guard could be all you need. Good luck! CarolAnn

Thank you so very much for your reply,CarolAnn. I do wear a mouth guard and have for years and years...just had it checked by the periodontist recently....and I have been having to wear it day and night for these aching jaws. By discovering this wonderful website,I have read that others on Celexa have experienced jaw clenching;but the Adderall which I definitely need seems to set the muscular tension off all the more. The doctor told me to stop the Adderall;however,I can't function without the bit of energy it gives to me.
Guess this means that I must make another 1,000th med change this coming week!!!....my poor, tired, weary 56 year old bones and mind and heart really, really dread doing this!!!!
Again,I thank you. JudithC

Hi there, Judith... I am on Adderall, and I was having the same problems you described. I was wondering if you drink much coffee? When I first started the Adderall, I was drinking a pot of coffee a day. One day I ran out of my creamer, so I didn't have my coffee. I didn't really miss it that much, so I decided just to quit drinking it. I noticed after a couple of days that the tension in my jaw and all the other side effects from it were gone! I still have a 20oz Coke a day, but that doesn't really do any damage. I would certainly give it a whirl if that could possibly be the culprit!

Sarah, you may have hit on something BIG here!!! I drink 2 cups of coffee in the morning followed by swilling on lots and lots of diet cola all day long. Will get a grip on this caffeine thingy. Many thanks for the help.

Judith,

Just a thought but the Nutrasweet could be the culprit as well. It will give me muscle tension and a migraine within minutes, if I take it in any form. It has recently been linked to MS symptoms as well. A friend of mine a few years back who was otherwise healthy, began having unexplainable "mini seizures." She went from specialist to specialist with no satisfaction until one doctor asked about her consumption of diet drinks. She was drinking them all day, like water. She stopped the Nutrasweet and guess what? No more seizures.

Nutrasweet is bad stuff. Poison. Stay away from it!

Be well.

Karen

I went off caffeine a few months ago, because I figured it would be silly to change any of my medications without checking out how the caffeine elimination would affect me. Surprisingly, I don't miss it as much as I had in the past when I quit. I still have to contend with my depression and figuring out my meds, but at least I feel less tethered to short term highs and lows.

As for nutrasweet, I rarely use it because when I have, I have usually gotten a bad headache about an hour later.

The other benefit of no caffeine is less sleep problems, which are already complicated enough.

You know,I have been seriously thinking about this Nutrasweet issue and wondering if I am taking in too much of it so your kind posts have not surprised me at all. Today I begin abstaining from all Nutrasweet products!!! And,I plan to leave off the caffeine just to make sure....thank y'all so very much for the help and for the info. JudithC
