zyprexa for mood disorder?

Posted by Lindsey on April 13, 2000, at 9:10:30

Hello, My doctor put me on zyprexa 2.5, and then put me on another 2.5mg. so I take two pills only at night. I gained 5lbs on one pill, does this mean when I take two pills I will gain another 5lbs? This is good for me due to being underweight.. I am currently on zoloft also..will this make me gain weight?
Thanks
Lindsey

Lindsey - The weight gain doesn't work like that. There are trends with the weight gain caused by Zyprexa, though. Usually, those who are underweight will gain more weight than those who are already overweight. Also, the weight gain usually plateaus at about 9 months, so you probably won't increase in weight forever. Hopefully it increases your weight to a level you are comfortable with. For many people, it is a very good drug.

Zoloft can cause weight gain in some people, but not as frequently as Zyprexa - Cam W.

Lindsey,

I agree with Cam about the weight gain with Zyprexa. I put on a lot of weight during the first few months but then stabilized. Now I am trying to get rid of the weight and I am successful with proper dieting and excersizing. In the last 5 weeks I have been able to drop 17 pounds while still taking 7.5 mg/day of Zyprexa. You really can control your weight if it's a big concern.

Let us know how it works out for you.

Chris
