Celexa Users Poll

Posted by CarolAnn on April 10, 2000, at 8:29:12

I keep hearing different things about Celexa and sleep. I can't figure out if I should take it in the morning, so it doesn't harm my night time sleep. Or, if I should take it at night so it doesn't make me sleepy during the day. I've tried both, but with the other meds. I am on, it's hard to tell what is doing what. If all you Celexa users don't mind, could you tell which dosing schedule works best for you.
Also, delicate question, like some of you, I have experienced increased perspiration with Celexa. There's no odor problem, but I have not been able to find any anti-persperant that will keep my underarms dry(sorry to be graphic!)! Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time! CarolAnn

>CarolAnn, I took Celexa at night. This did help with the drowsiness during the day, but did not help with the stoned, no emotion feeling I had on it so doc took me off it after many complaints from me. Question for you; I am about to start Zoloft Wed. along with Buspar that I have been on for about 3 weeks. Know anything about this combonation? I am really concerned with the blunt feeling and weight gain. Thanks Gloria

Gloria, I don't know anything about Buspar, except that it works great for some people and not at all for others. I did take Zoloft a couple years ago, and in the beginning it was really helpful. I was on 50mgs., then it pooped out and I got upped to 100mgs. This was probably not a fair trial, though because I had to quit, because I was trying to get pregnant. But, from what I've heard, when Zoloft works, it works great! Good Luck! CarolAnn

I have been taking Celexa for 1 week. I started at 10 mg for the first 3 days and have been on 20 mg for the last 4. On 10 mg I didn't notice any side affects. I was already nauseated. That's part of my depression. When I increased I noticed I was completely exhausted and drained the next day and have been ever since. This is not part of my depression as I usually have to much nervous energy and have to keep moving so I won't think. I had been taking it late at about 10 pm. Tonight I took it at about 7 pm to see if it makes any difference in the tiredness. I have not noticed any change in my depression yet and am trying not to get discouraged.

I take celexa in the morning--it was giving me insomnia problems. I also take a small dose of seroquel at night, and that helps me get a full night of sleep.

Erin--hang in there, it can take a while for celexa to have effects other than side effects--the worst part is feeling crappy and hoping that medication will start to work. when it does, it's great; until then (it took me 5 antidepressants to find the right one), the best (and unfortunately, completely un-reassuring) advice I have is to try to be patient--I found grumbling and chocolate to help.

>I had insomnia before I started the celexa. Did it help anyone with that or make it worse? Also, I have restless leg syndrome. It showed up when I was pregnant with my daughter and came back with this depression. I've heard AD's can make it worse. Anyone have any experience with it? Rebecca, Thank you for the encouraging words. I appreciate it.

> I've been on Celexa since May of 1999 and let me sing the praises. Yes, the side effects are pretty overwhelming at first but livable. I remember walking in the grocery store (of course shopping for my family is a all day affair) and I started sweating profusly. It was embarassing because it came from no where. Hell, people probably thought I was going to have a heart attack. Anyway, it seems that the side effect lasted less than 3 months and the benefits have been overwhelming. I'm happy, really happy, again for the first time in so long and the only side effect that was the toughest was the libido. I find it is getting easier to "climb the mountain" and function again. This is my testimony. I am glad I stuck it out and would do it all over again.

gail

by the way I take 20 mgs in the am.

Hi Rebecca,
I'm on 5 mg celexa - (10 mg caused too much sexual side effect) and it seems to help my mood which is anxiety which causes depression.
You mentioned seroquel for sleep at night. My pdoc wants to try seroquel alone instead of celexa but your post intrigues me...maybe to augment as you are doing.
How many mgs. do you take at night and how long does it take to work (in minutes)? Have you experimented with different dosages - what's good for you?
I have to take a heck of alot of ativan and a little neurontin for the anxiety but if the seroquel/celexa combination works I might suggest it to my pdoc - he's very good. Anyway, is your diagnosis similar to mine?
Thanks!
Alan

Alan--
I was on 60 mg celexa in the morning, but just cut that down to 40 since I had no motivation to do anything, but was in a good mood.

I'm taking 25 mg seroquel at night--I don't know if that's enough to have antipsychotic benefits (it's only been a few weeks and I only sporadically have reality issues), but that's what it's primarily there for. the help sleeping is a convenient side effect, which means that I don't have to take anything else (I took trazodone for a few days, but it left me really zonked all morning). It always takes me 1/2 hour to an hour or more to fall asleep, and the seroquel doesn't seem to change that. The problem I was having was waking up at 3 am and not getting much sleep after then. I was on 3 mg risperdal, but had side effect issues with it and had to stop taking it.

sexual side effects aren't an issue for me--I never had much of a sex drive in my non-medicated state, and there aren't any dating opportunities where I live now. so not having any desire for relationship/whatever is actually a benefit (at least right now....)

I don't have any anxiety (except when I took prozac, but that's another story...). My problem is depression and, well, I don't know if I'd be technically psychotic, but periodically losing touch with what everyone else would consider reality. It'd probably be somewhat acceptable as a religious experience in a non-Judeo-Christian society if the experiences didn't make me suicidal. but that's a whole other story, too.

Rebecca

I was doing pretty well on Paxil for a yr, but Dr. and I decided to try Celexa. AntiD effective but I am tired alot. Stopped the Buspar combo cause it didnt seem to do anything. Reading all these conflicting posts sometimes murks up the waters, but helpful from a "same boat" syndrome.
