Bathroom Urgency?

Posted by Meesha on April 9, 2000, at 16:43:44

Has anyone experienced increased need to urinate? I've been getting up at least 12 times a night and I don't have much to void. I always feel like I have to go. (I bought an UTI test and I don't have a bladder infection....) I also feel incredibly listless and sleep whenever I'm not peeing!!!

Could this be a side effect of Celexa? Let me know if anyone has experienced the same...

Meesha - Many of the SSRIs (eg Paxil and Zoloft) can cause urinary frequency, so I suppose Celexa would not be much different. Good to rule out a UTI first. The problem with you women is that you have a short ureter (not much muscle), so it is harder for you to hold your dribbles when they occur.

When are you taking the Celexa: a.m. or p.m.? If taking it at night and it doesn't cause too much drowsiness, try taking it in the morning. This may decrease the frequency of night time urination.

How long have you been taking Celexa? If less than 4 to 6 weeks, this side effect still may subside with time.

Talk to your doctor about this. There are some anticholinergics that can decrease this side effect, but they have side effects of their own (esp. dry mouth and membranes, sensitivity to the sun, and drowsiness).

Hope this helps a bit. - Cam W.

Meesha,

I also have increased urgency from effexor, I think. It is not so much frequency (tho I do have this from the lithium), but just that the urge to go comes on very very suddenly and strongly, and it is hard to hold in. Once I am there, after a short burst of flow, I have to focus to get more to come out, tho it is there. These effects are very annoying.

Meesha, I had increased urinary urgency (and could hardly make it to the toilet sometimes!) with Serzone. Talk to your pdoc about it and see if there is something you can do.
