Testosterone and Depression

Posted by Ted on April 4, 2000, at 1:14:56

After reading last week's New York Times Magazine cover article on testosterone, I am very curious as to whether anyone has taken testosterone injections to successfully combat depression. If you haven't read the article, I highly recommend it. The author writes of his own experience with testosterone injections and it seems to have completely transformed him.

Thank you for that link, Ted. After reading it, I have to agree, everyone should check the story out. I especially find it interesting since testosterone and cholesterol are somehow linked, and I recently read a news release stating that a connection between low cholesterol levels and depression/suicide-risk has been established. My total cholesterol count was 109!!!
My doctor was baffled by the reading, knowing that I haven't been able to exercise regularly for some time due to fatigue.
The way this author described his experience, it seemed that every positive reaction he got from the testosterone was the EXACT things that I have lost, ie. Energy,Strength,Labido,Energy,Self-Awareness, did I mention Energy.
Certainly makes me wonder.

What a great article! It makes me want to go out and get some. I could use some of that confidence and physical energy.

I'm intrigued by this too. Has anyone tried the
herbal Androstenedione?

I tend to agree with saint james that messing with hormones that are within normal levels is a dangerous undertaking. Not be taken lightly or in too cavalier a fashion. Many negative and dangerous and sometimes permanent effects result from boosted hormone levels when they were normal to begin with.

I know a doctor who created bar graphs of 250 patients during a year showing the percentages of patients that got well on different classes of drugs. Testosterone was dead last on the list, being warranted and effective in only 2 of the 250 patients.

I too was excited about the possibility of testosterone treatment. I just got my bi-annual blood test results and my testosterone level is as normal as can be. I guess it's possible testosterone supplementation for me might be mood-boosting, even though my levels are normal. Anything's possible. But the adverse effects and risks are too high. Manipulating neurotransmitters is one thing, but messing with hormones is a completely different game.
