Does anyone know if ziprasidone has been, or is going to be released on the US market?

Thanks,

Chris A.

Chris - At a lecture I had recently attended, the presenter, Dr.R.Petty (same guy who said schizophrenia & bipolar where the same disorder), also said that Ziprasidone will not be released (in U.S. or Canada) due to some heart problems that it causes. I have not talked to the Pfizer rep lately, though, so I don't know the real status. - Cam W.

Thanks for the info., Cam. It's a neuroleptic. My consultant had it on the list of treatments for me to try, but it's been eight months since I saw him. Zeldox must have been the trade name.

Noa - Zeldox (ziprasidone) is another atypical antipsychotic. It can cause heart problems, so it may not make it to market in the U.S. and Canada. I think it is believed not to cause the weight gain of Zyprexa or the EPS and prolactin increases of Risperidone, while maintaining the efficacy of these agents. I would like to see it used in clinical practice before making any definitive claims on it though, and it looks like I may not be able to do that any time soon (sigh). Hope this helps - Cam W.

Cam W. Question

Cam,

My doctor seemed to think that Zeldox was on track to be relesed this year. I have searched the Pfizer website for mention of it and the only ones were in the 1998 Annual report. In several places they said that they would be submitting it to the FDA in 1999.

Do you know if it was ever submitted? Or were the heart problems found in their own studies and thus not submitted for approval?

When your Pfizer rep comes to visit will you please ask him where it stands? I like my Zyprexa but the weight thing is really a pain and I'm not sure about the long term use and its overall longterm effects.

Thanks,
Chris

The Advisory Committee to the FDA recommended approval of Zeldox/Ziprasidone in July, 2000.
