Biting down on my teeth

Posted by JL on March 7, 2000, at 12:56:43

I bite down on my teeth A LOT.Not on purpose. I just find myself doing it and it hurts. I do it especially when I'm nervous. It is not a grinding, just a tight bite. Would medicine help ? I also have a compulsion about pressing my toes down as I'm going down the road at drive ways, trees, anything that is different than the flat road. Odd I know.

The latter sounds like something in the OCD family.

As for biting down, is it like clenching your jaw?

Yes, you are right on both counts. I'm on 100mg of Seroquel among mood stabilizers.

I've been doing the same thing (is this called bruxism?) since I started taking Parnate a while back. My lower molars and gums are killing me! Is there anything that can help alleviate this?

There was a thread about this a couple of months ago- check the archives. I've gone to the dentist for teeth grinding, aka bruxism-- side effect of various meds...he'd recommended a mouthpiece to wear at night, among other things. Other people on the board said a mouthpiece helped them. I've been feeling too broke to spring for it yet.

My girlfriend grinds her teeth at night ... not very good for the crowns she has. Her "nightguard" works wonders ... and the high-pitched squeak she can generate when she forgets to wear it can wake the dead!

I know hers is something custom made by her dentist. Cost a lot of money, too. I sure hope it's worth that, versus the ol' "dunk it in hot water, stick it in your mouth, bite down and suck!" sports mouthguards I always had as a kid.

cheers,
bob
