Problems with site?

Posted by Dr. Bob on March 4, 2000, at 11:12:43

Hi, everyone,

It seems from this end that the site has lately run into some problems. Have you had any trouble? If so, can you describe what happened? Thanks,

Bob

Unable to post any message, new or threaded, seems to be the problem. Did you just fix it?

I'm using Netscape 4.6.
It wouldn't let me post.
The error had something to do with the "server's configuration."
I also was receiving "Network errors ... reset by peers" errors,
and had to reload the page several times.

Have you ever been able to start a new thread? Maybe it was just a temporary problem. If not, then see:

I have started many threads before, but this morning I could not either. I kept getting the server error as well. While I have your attention, I would like to thank you for taking the time to make this site available to us. I'm sure it takes more than a little time to keep up with it all. It means a lot to me.

Search feature on Tips page does not appear to work (browser does not receive reply from server). Both buttons affected.
Was able to post follow-up message last night but post did not show up until this morning, despite repeated Ctrl-Refresh tries.

I've tried to clean it up a little here, let's see what happens. Thanks for your patience,

Hey Dr. Bob,

Do you know when your server backups get run? Saturday morning at 1 AM, perhaps? That's the problem I figured I was having at that time -- I could read any message, but I couldn't post anything new ... it just returned a server error.

Good idea, but I don't think it's that. It looks more like for some reason the script occasionally gets hung up, which then backs everyone else up. I'm trying to track it down. Thanks for your patience...

I was just having the same problem previously brought up. For me, the search finds no pages, regardless the search string or parameters.

thanks!

Which pages?

That happens to me sometimes, too. (FYI, what you're seeing is the HTML behind the page.) What works for me in these situations is either reloading the page or clicking the link again.

I wonder if it might have been related to the problems with the server. I'm hoping those are fixed. Is the search still not working?

If not, are you getting a response with no links to pages that match your criteria, or no response at all (or an error)?

Are you using Internet Explorer? Maybe it's related to the problem that keeps some people from being able to start a new thread here...

Dr. Bob-

Earlier search problem on Tips page seemed to be intermittent--works fine right now. When Babble was down yesterday, Tips Search was unaffected.

Re: Babble message links. Every 5th-6th link comes up HTML--irregularly irregular pattern; very rarely, an MS "page not available." Refresh button always works, albeit, slowly at times--no shift or control key needed. I use IE 5.0. I have had no problems starting a new thread or posting to an existing one.

BTW, was unable to use your frames page hint for messages. Message frame disappeared when next Babble link was activated. IE quite likely to blame--every MS update removes a little more flexibility in the name of user friendliness. Guess we should just be glad that Alt+Tab still works.

Thanks for the quick fix! Withdrawal sxs alleviated.

Thanks for the updates. Regarding the version with two frames in one window, if you click (in the left, contents frame) on a link to a post then what happens? Are you saying you get the post, but it takes over the whole window, so you lose the frames?

Dr. Bob-

No, IE wsn't the problem, I was--user error. I failed to resize the main Babble window; I only resized the link/message window--but, of course, it was still overlaid, so naturally it disappeared! Duh.

But, on this dumb IE browser, once you click on the "full window/maximize" icon, the option to resize that window is no longer available. Must close out the window and reopen it from another open web page or restart the browser. Then, all other pages you consult are also only half-width--forevermore. All in all, it's easier to Alt+Tab.

Netscape probably makes this process easier. (I only use IE because I used to have to write to it at work.) I think the only way your option would work easily on IE is if the script for Babble was written as a frames page like your Tips page. I'm confident this would set up a howl of protest, tho--and be a royal pain to rewrite, as well. I can think of no real reason why IE could not have included an option on the View menu to display 2 open web pages side-by-side.
Just basic MS arrogance at work, from the people who made "paperclip" a 4-letter word.

Congratulations on your two centuries of e-achievement!

You can't click the icon again to un-maximize the window?

Guess what? As mentioned in the FAQ, at:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#options

There is in fact a verison that uses two frames in one window, at:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/babble.html

That's the version I use myself. I think it's the most convenient. Give it a try if you're feeling adventurous. :-)
