I have been on Celexa about 6 months and have gained 20 lbs!! I hate the weight gain, but it has done wonders for my depression. My pdoc suggested switching to Effexor but I am scared to get on that merry-go-round again. I'd love to hear from others on Effexor or what to do about the weight gain!

I have been taking effexor for a few years, first the regular version, and for the past two years, the xr version.

I have gained a lot of weight during this time, and have heard from others here that effexor caused weight gain. For me, it is hard to know if the medication is the culprit, because I have also been sedentary and have eaten a lot to soothe my feelings. So, who knows?

In any event, others here have felt that effexor caused weight gain.

What I have heard is that wellbutrin is not supposed to cause weight gain.

I take Effexor XR, at 150, and have so far had little luck losing the 30 pounds I gained on Zoloft (which I took for many years before I switched to Effexor). I work out, vigorously and often, and try to eat sensibly; I feel fit, but still look chunky, no matter what I do. (I had food poisoning a few weeks ago and couldn't keep anything down for 2 days. I GAINED weight!) This bothers me a lot. But I plan to continue taking Effexor in spite of this... it quickly stopped a bad depression, I feel like a normal human being on it, and the only other bothersome side effect is some insomnia. (A little Trazodone before bed takes care of this.) Being depression-free is worth 30 pounds to me...

Celexa is not supposed to cause weight gain. That is what my doctor, MSW and psychologist told me. I have only been on it 2 weeks so it is too soon to know for sure. I have had no appetite since I started it. Hope that helps. The drug literature says possible side effects, weight gain or weight loss.

I have to go off effexor because of 40 pound
weight gain in 2 months.

I am so sad because it really helped my depression.

I was first on celexa which caused mild gain,
then went to effexor with remeron for sleep.

Because of tireness doc added wellbrutin which
had no affect.

I cut each med one at a time to see what was
causing problem with no affect on weight although
dieting. It was the effexor.

Side effect was so bad including enlarged pregnant
looking stomach.

Back to Prozac because I ever had problem with
this, and not feeling as good.

Really sad to have to stop effexor; it was great!
