Babysitting

Posted by Noa on February 25, 2000, at 21:11:15

Those kids I thought were coming last weekend are actually here this weekend, and I'll be taking care of them tomorrow. Good thing it is this weekend, because I am feeling a tad better. And, lucky us, the weather is great. I hope they haven't been to the zoo yet, so we can do that, which is a breeze of a way to spend the afternoon. Philosophically, I have a lot of conflicting feelings about zoos, but not so strong that I can't go and enjoy. At least, I think I have the energy to do this, tho I know I'll probably be pretty spent by the end of the day.

Have a great time, Noa. And tell the gorillas hello for me! (They are sooo cool.) There's one older gorilla at the zoo that I go to that always looks depressed. Anyone have ideas for him!? :)Renee N

More power to ya' Noa! I wish I could snag somebody to take my five kiddos for the day :-) You are brave, if you feel overwhelmed, just remember, it's not for ten years, or even a year, or a month, catch my drift :-) Is the med-mix helping you yet? You said you're feeling a tad better, is that energy-wise, or mind-wise? Hope you feel able through the busy weekend, and hope you get to smile. Actually, I hope you get to laugh and enjoy the time with the kids, even if they run you a little ragged :-)

That is the great thing about other people's kids! They're temporary!

I'll be taking two little girls to the zoo, and I think it will be fun.

Yes, I am a bit better, both mood and energy wise. Still, not where I'd like to be, but better than the slumpy slump of a week ago. I don't know if the med increases are working yet, or if it is the hope of them working. There is still a lot of room for improvement.

Dove, it sounds like you just had a very frustrating experience with your daughter's school. Sorry to hear that. The food restriction thing surprises me, it is not the typical thing recommended by schools. I heard one of the proponents of this approach speak two years ago, I forget his name right now, but it bothered me that he had no credible research and that all his books were self published. I know that there are those that read conspiracy theory into this, that the establishment wont let him in (that is kind of his position), but if he would seem credible at least to a few colleagues, maybe they would help him get funded for a study.
Somewhere around this lair, I also have the conference book from the NIH consensus conference on ADHD from last year. I believe there were some presentations on "alternative" approaches. If I can dig up the book and there is something worth looking at, I'll let you know. Maybe I could fax something to you. They may also have this material at their web site, I don't know.

On the other hand, I am sure that some people, when all else has failed, will find his approach, or other similar approaches, helpful. The problem is , these diets are rough. They are rough on the kids and on the parents. And the effort to go through the elimination process is brutal. Next time someone suggests it to you, ask them if they personally have tried it with their child, and what that was like. Chances are they didn't try it. It is one thing for an adult to take this on for themselves, but it is another to ask a parent to do this with a child. It is just another place to create power struggles.

It went well. Thanks guys, for the support. I had enough energy to do it and enjoy it.

We went to the zoo. Highlights? 1)Watching the giraffe poop--from afar and up close, several times. This was a huge hit. 2)Running and jumping along the park benches. 3) Using the hand dryers in the bathroom. 4) Eating ice cream. 5) Eating french fries. 6) Eating hot pretzels with mustard.

In between all the eating and bench jumping and the numerous trips to the bathroom (which suited me and my lithium besieged bladder just fine anyway)we managed to see about 1% of the zoo animals (cheetahs, elephants, rhinos, hippos, and of course, as you already know, poopy giraffes).

Major accomplishment of the day? This category goes hands down to the 4 year old who made it all the way to the bathroom from afar, with only a little leakage, despite her belief that she was no way no how gonna make it (boy can I relate!).

Afterward, I also had a nice time just hanging out and talking to their Mom, who is relative by marriage, and we have known each other a long time.

I am so glad it was this weekend and not last. I don't think I could have done it last week.

Noa - What a delightful day! Glad you enjoyed. I personally like the silver-back gorillas and hippo's. San Diego Zoo is the BEST.

Thanks, Brenda.

I did want to get to the gorillas and orangutans, but it wasn't in the cards. I hear the apes exhibit is great, and it has been ages since I went to the zoo, until yesterday. I guess I'll have to plan a trip for me one of these days.
