altered states, altered types?

Posted by bob (now @thefineline.org [shameless plug]) on February 16, 2000, at 18:27:04

Brandon J mentioned something in his thread that struck me:

> ...It turns me into a slow-witted, non-creative analyzer, rather than the fast-paced feeler I'm so used to being

Now, being a "scientifically-trained" psychologist (of the non-clinical sort), I tend to toss the Myers-Briggs Type Indicators in with Horoscopes. All the same, Brandon's comment smacks of a rather major shift from Feeling to Thinking on that axis.

So, any comments for you folk out there who "know" your type pre-medication and on meds? This INFP will (naturally) let others have their say before weighing in myself.

Cheers,
bob

Hey, Bob, I visited your site. It looks great. Is it me/my browser, or is accessing the buttons still under construction?

Glad you're back here at Babble. Hope it's for good.

I tell you one thing -- the manic response I had to Zoloft my first time on it sent this INFP into ESFP land ... definitely no (T)hining involved nor much attention paid to i(N)tuition. (J)udgement? Fuggedabowdit!

No, Noa, it's not just you--the links go nowhere at thi time. I've been too busy managing the black hole I've been in by obsessing over Railroad Tycoon II instead of designing and developing my site. As much as I hate zoloft, I do have to admit it kept my OCD-like traits completely under wraps.

Maybe with the long weekend I'll get something done, so I can make that announcement about it (I'm pretty sure I told you about it via email) and open it up for submissions.

[Keep your fingers crossed for me -- our idiot superintendent scheduled our one snowday makeup for Friday even tho the kids have Thursday off--teachers have a professional development day--and we may just get hit with an ice storm that will snow out the snowday makeup day. Poetic justice if I ever saw it.]

Hi Bob,

Great to see you posting again. Hope you've been well.

I also took that MB test, I believe I was an ENFP...but all this mental illness makes me more introverted!

Myers-Briggs

You know, I think that there's a certain degree of usefulness to these tests, but I'm all over the place with them. Over the past 10-15 years, I've come up about 4 different types, and it's very hard for me to make decisions on answering the questions "correctly" (surprise!). I don't see a correlation between medication and the vacillation, but I think I'd have to have a much more scientific record of results of both tests and medications in order to judge.

INTP pretty consistently in a number of testings, however the I & E were close enough at times to make me an X, as with the T & P, so XNTX, though the better books on MB also focus on those two centre constanants as key indicators of type, for whatever that's worth. The more down I am the more I skew toward I and the more up toward E...

Nice to see you back Bob & to be back in the front door myself... : )

Nice to be back, dj. Glad to hear you're back as well. Thanks, Janice ... but no, I was in a pretty good facsimilie of what Dante described as the seventh level of Hell ... got one foot and most of my body outside the door, tho. Hopefully, nothing will tug me back in and I can stay here a while.

The results I have on my most comprehensive MBTI test focuses on those middle two initials as well, Plus, it shows your score for any dimension on a continuum, so you can see places (like the I/E axis for me) where you really straddle the line.

cheers,
bob

Bob, I was consistently an INTP (flaming T and P) the many times I took the test(seems to be a hot corporate test no matter what management course I was in LOL)prior to depression. I took it once after the depression appeared and was shocked to see ISFJ.

I guess I have been pretty constant on the middle 2, NF, but definitely all over the place with I and E...
